Yes, there was no question that this was an imposing and grand property and I felt a sense of eager anticipation upon arrival at what might be inside, as I always do when visiting historical buildings to tune the piano within. Imagine my surprise when I was informed by the owner that ‘You might be interested to learn that this was the home of the Broadwood family, seeing as you’re a piano man’.. Lyne House was owned by the Broadwood family from 1799 (John Broadwood & Sons) and for generations thereafter until the death of Capt. Evelyn Broadwood in 1975 when thereafter the house fell into disrepair.
It was fascinating to walk in through the door and see all the portraits of the family throughout the entrance hall and rather charmingly an old but sadly dysfunctional Broadwood grand piano taking centrepiece in the large reception room as a nod to the family business. Lyne house was divided into flats in the 1980’s but the essence of the original layout remains to this day. For me at least, this was a most captivating and interesting visit to the home of the most significant piano maker that ever existed and to who we as piano technicians owe much respect.

This morning saw me on a regular visit to tune this delightful late 60’s Yamaha C3 at Cranleigh Baptist Church. Always a pleasure to visit this lovely modern Church which has great acoustics, and is really suited to the characteristic ‘brightness’ of the C3.

Recommissioning work begins on this charming 1915 circa Bechstein Model A today. The action has been assessed and removed for sympathetic reconditioning in the workshop, only to receive what it absolutely needs to get it playing again as per the customer’s instructions. Significant moth damage to the keybed sadly so I will be replacing the back touch, balance rail and front rail felts to start the process. Not all clients want or need full restoration on their pianos, unlike many technicians, my speciality (and passion) is with the challenge of keeping these lovely older pianos alive so they can be enjoyed for years to come without the eye watering price tag!
