Nick Tozer Railway Books

Nick Tozer Railway Books Nick Tozer Railway Books Who am I? I'm Nick - for over over twenty years now I have been buying and selling railway related publications. What about my business?

As a collector and enthusiast myself (before taking early retirement I spent thirty years in the footplate grades on British Rail) I have a good understanding of what has been published on the subject and how useful as a reference tool any particular title is - I enjoy searching for those elusive titles and if you ask me to conduct a search you may rest assured that I will not stop looking until I

find a copy at a price that I believe reflects the true value of the item. I trade through my shop, via mail-order and at exhibitions - shop opening hours on homepage. I currently have over nineteen thousand railway books in stock. email me at: [email protected]

To ensure the best prices please try to include as much information as possible about the condition of the items offered.

I've just sold a £12.00 book on a major online platform ... they charged me £1.95 commission on the sale so I still got £10.05 for a book that I bought-in at £4.95 .... wrong! The book was going to the antipodes and the cheapest postage was £24.30 (with 85p for the mailing box) so I charged the customer £25.00 p&p. now the 'major online platform' also charges the same level of commission on the postage so I got £20.95 but still had to pay £25.15 so another £4.20 is deducted from the £10.05 leaving me with £0.90 profit yeahhhhhh ... oh wait ... as the £24.30 was offering delivery up to 80 days after posting I paid an extra £0.80 to obtain 5-7 days delivery because I value my customer's satisfaction over profit.

Twenty or more years ago I started insuring my business with Rigton Insurance and as the requirement became more important I added public liability to cover my attendance at shows. When I attend shows it is the norm now to be asked to confirm that I have Public Liability Insurance to cover me at these shows and my policy number is required to confirm this.

A few years ago Rigton was consumed by PIB and I continued to receive TWIMC letters to prove my cover and verbal assurances that I was insured.

Following a data breach by the insurers that resulted in my being sent somebody else's insurance documents I finally received my own policy and had cause to question my cover.

Basically I have £5m Public Liability Cover INSIDE my shop and ZERO cover at shows!

Finally eight days after my old policy lapsed I managed to get hold of my 'Virtual Account Handler' and chase up what was happening to rectify the problem.

Today's solution is to increase the cost of my policy by 81% to cover me at shows! Bear in mind that the original 100% was to insure the fabric of the shop I own and my stock.

Obviously this is ludicrous ... if anyone out there can suggest an insurer who will give me £3m Public Liability cover at Model Railway shows without wanting over £400 I'd be pleased to hear.

Spending a weekend in August down at the Union Jack Club with a meet with old (and valued) friends on Saturday (9th) and a funeral on the Monday I was reminded that the Bluebell Railway is celebrating its 65th Anniversary over that weekend with a Cavalcade on the 10th ... Dayrover purchased 😀

It was also a reminder that 40 years ago I was present at the Bluebell for a Gala Cavalcade on the 14th July 1985

Just opened the 2025/2026 Business Rates Bill for my shop ... my rates are now 240% the 2024/2025 figure ... together with the ridiculous electricity bills I'm not sure how much longer I can keep my shop open ... 😕
