Down the concrete pipe, into the dark, and away. Our friend Gareth Williams and the crew from Kendal Caving Club have sent over their latest: the Lancaster Hole to Wilf Taylor's round trip, with a cheeky detour to the Colonnades.

For the uninitiated, that's one of the Dales' great underground journeys: squeezes, abseils, scalloped streamway and proper deep-cave chambers, all looped back to where they started.

Sit back and let them take you underground. If it brings back memories of your own Ease Gill days, send it on to whoever you'd rope up with. 👍

Limestone is the bedrock of British caving. Head east to Flamborough and the story changes completely.

These caves weren't dissolved by water and acid but worn away by the sea attacking weak points, wherever vertical cracks or fault lines appeared in the horizontal beds of chalk. The chalk at Flamborough is actually harder than in southern England thanks to higher calcite content, so the headland resists erosion well overall but those fault lines are its weakness, and the sea has had a VERY long time to find them. 🌊

Result is the largest number and widest range of chalk cave habitats of any chalk site in Britain. Pre-glacially the caves were already forming. During the Ice Age they were plugged with boulder clay. After the glaciers retreated and the North Sea refilled, waves stripped the clay back, revealing passages that had been waiting for millennia. 🔦

Smugglers found them useful too. Robin Lythe's Hole, one of the most celebrated caves here, is named after the man who reportedly used it to bring contraband ashore and store it for the black markets of inland Yorkshire.
