Ireland's first people may have walked in... from Wales. 🤯

Rock art expert Dr George Nash has found cave engravings in south-west Ireland. They're at least 15,000 years old. That's 5,000 older than any past proof of humans there.

The theory: sea levels fell in the last Ice Age. A land bridge opened between Pembrokeshire and the Rosslare coast, about 46 miles wide. Hunter-gatherers could've walked straight across.

An AI model trained on known cave sites in south Wales pointed the team to 28 possible caves in Ireland. Eight held real rock art: engravings, ochre and charcoal paintings, and lines pressed into clay by fingertips.

We're Yorkshire through and through. But every now and then it's good to see what t'neighbours are up to.

This was Saturday's view. We were ont way up Walla Crag, above Derwentwater. Down there is the Jaws of Borrowdale, the valley pinches in tight, then opens out again.

Not bad, Cumbria. Not bad at all. 👏

We'll still take the Dales any day. But go on, what walk(s) took you over the border this year?

Pull the handle too hard. The rope stops.

Lowering is where new belayers freeze, not the catch. On the Petzl GRIGRI+, the worst reflex becomes a full stop, not a fast lower. 👍

Free your Saturday for the Three Peaks?

This Saturday, 29th August, Trash Free Trails and Right to Roam are running a litter-pick across the Yorkshire Three Peaks route. Meet at Horton-in-Ribblesdale car park, 7am to 4pm. Pick a route section to suit you, some are flat, some take in the Pen-y-Ghent scramble. 👍

Bring water, waterproofs, sun cream and grippy shoes. The limestone gets slippy when wet. Phone signal is patchy up there, so don't rely on it for navigation.

Horton station café opens at 10am for tea, coffee and cake. Two pubs and a Co-op are close by too.

It's free. Just bring a bag and a few hours.

In 1930, a 17-year-old caver descended into the Trou du Glaz on the Dent de Crolles. He couldn't get enough of this experience.

His name was 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝘇𝗹, a machinist in Grenoble who solved problems by making the tools nobody else had. 🧐

By 1947, he and caving partner Pierre Chevalier had linked the deepest known cave system in the world. By 1956, they pushed past 1,000 metres down in the Gouffre Berger, nearly two weeks underground.

The company, Petzl, built from Fernand's workshop is still run by his family today. We've told the whole story, including how it reached our shop in 1977.

A fisherman in Mexico has been found alive after 𝟭𝟱 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘃𝗲.

Erasto Crisanto Valdez, 31, went missing on 23rd July while fishing with his father near a cenote at San Francisco La Paz. He was found on 7th August, more than 100 metres down, in total darkness. He survived on rainwater plus an air pocket he found in the rock. 🤯

The search ran for 15 days. Teams searched by land, river and air. Police, civil protection and the navy all took part.

Stories like this remind us what search and rescue teams do for us all, voluntarily, teams such as the Cave Rescue Organisation and Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA). Both train hard and turn out in all weather, for people they've never met. 👏
