One of my very favourite things in the shop is when customers say, “I haven’t seen these things anywhere else on our holiday” 🥰, because I try very hard to source original items, many of which are only sold at Ness Gifts. So I jumped at the chance when Sarah Leask | Watercolour Artist and Illustrator agreed to do a bespoke painting for us, which she has printed on to various items. Sarah is a super talented watercolour artist, originally from the Shetland Isles and now based in Aberdeen. This vibrant iteration of the view from Dores is just perfect, and reminds me of the beautiful light we get at certain times of the year as the sun starts to set and emphasises the red rock that south Loch Ness is built on. 🥰

Today’s focus is on local artist Port In My Storm Designs , from Conon Bridge. Jac is an amazingly talented artist specialising in delicate hand drawn ink illustrations. Her art was her therapy against the stresses of life, and this can be seen in the mandala type designs that became her signature style. More recently, Jac has turned her attention to The Highland Bogles. These are whimsical little characters with unique personalities due to the pretty hand drawn illustrations and 3D embellishments added to each one. Each ornament comes with its own tiny certificate of authenticity and a branded drawstring pouch. ♥️ 👻 ♥️

Today’s Local Supplier Spotlight is on Highland Skincare from Aviemore. I was lucky to spot this brand on one of my Etsy browses, and I was delighted when I contacted Charlene and she was happy to let me sell her Scottish themed body scrubs. But these aren’t just novelty - these multi use scrubs not only gently cleanse your skin with natural ingredients, they exfoliate leaving a smoother, brighter appearance. And I can confirm that no Haggis were harmed in the making of these products!

Today’s highlighted local crafter is one I’m very excited about! Annika was one of the first crafters I worked with, having seen her work at a craft fair. Her highland cow hand painted slates sold by the bucket load! Unfortunately, ill health caused her to stop painting for a few years, but I’ve kept in touch, and today was delighted that she popped in with a box of hand painted goodies and the news that she is getting her painting mojo back!! 🥳 The detail in her painting is incredible, and each piece is completely unique as she works with the shapes and texture of the materials she is painting on. She currently isn’t stocking anywhere else, so pop down and grab yourself a unique piece of hand painted art before they’re gone. Great to have you back, Annika 🥰

So let’s start with these locally made products, since they are fresh in my mind having been delivered just today by Leah Grace Creations based just over in Nairn. These mugs are more than just beautiful - they are the perfect rounded shape to wrap your fingers around on a cold day! The wooden boards are made from acacia and look beautiful in any kitchen, and the bottle stoppers are unique little items - I’d barely got them on the shelf today and one was snapped up to be taken to its new home in America. They are all unique, and come in ocean blue resin or with dried heather flowers embedded. I just love it all 😍

Every year the summer brings us lots of lovely people, and we really enjoy welcoming them in to our little shop to see the beautiful things made by local people. Recently, unfortunately, there have been a few who have decided not to pay for their items 😢 This has mainly been happening when there are cruise ship coaches in the village and the shop is packed with people, making it hard to keep track. I find it incredible that people would spend ££££ on a cruise holiday, yet refuse to pay £20 for a locally handmade necklace 🤯 I am sad that today I will need to install cameras and put up signage to try to prevent this and protect our crafters 😢 Thank you to the 99% of customers who realise the value of the things we sell 💝
