I certainly do not oppose a sensible tourist tax in Highland region.

However, the proposed Highland Council 'Visitor Levy' is deeply flawed and unfair.

For the reasons listed below, I will be opposing the 'Visitor Levy'. by answering, 'strongly disagree' to every question in the HIGHLAND COUNCIL VISITOR LEVY CONSULTATION.

**The consultation survey needs to be found and completed using a google search **. I, and others, had Facebook posts removed today because posting the link to the consultation seemingly breached cybersecurity rules???? This seems a bit fishy to me - as though highland Council don’t want us to share it 🙄

1. It is an accommodation tax not a tourist tax.

2. Everyone will have to pay, including residents staying in their own council area.

3. Where applicable, VAT will be added to the levy, so a £5 per night tax becomes £6.

4. It is an extra tax on residents. People staying away for medical appointments, visiting relatives in hospital, working away from home etc will be charged.

5. Income from the levy will go into the Council pot rather than being ring-fenced for investment in the communities and areas generating the income.

6. The levy will be treated as part of an accommodation provider’s turnover for HMRC purposes, putting some businesses over the VAT threshold.

7. It will be complicated and burdensome for accommodation providers to administer.

8. Motor homes, camper-vans, tents, caravans, car-camping will not be charged if they are not staying on an official campsite.

9. Day visitors and cruise ship passengers will pay nothing.

10. There will be no cap on the number of nights the levy is charged.

PLEASE FIND THE SURVEY AND FILL IT IN TO LET HC KNOW THIS TAX IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN ITS CURRENT FORM

We don’t have to travel too far to find the next local maker…. Julia Naughty Scottie lives just along the road at Ness Castle with her Naughty Scottie dogs! She specialises in Scottie related gifts, but also makes these wonderful tea light candle holders that appeal to everyone. They are simple yet special, and come wrapped in cello, perfect for gifting 💝

You can’t get much more local than this…. We have several suppliers based right here in the village of Dores! Claire is a relative newcomer to crochet, but makes whimsical Nessies and lovely thistle brooches. Danielle lives next door to Claire and designed and prints these self cling Nessie suncatchers. Annette lives at the other end of the village, and has created pebble art pictures for years. This ‘Hiker’ one is a firm favourite at Ness Gifts! Zero carbon footprint on these lovely gifts!!

Today’s local products will be recognisable to many of you!! Anta Scotland is one of the most iconic brands of the Highlands and a real reminder that ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get’. It was a chance phone call a pout our stair carpet when I took the opportunity to ask owner and designer Annie Stewart if it might be possible for me to sell their smaller items in a gift shop that I was in the planning stages of setting up. At that point, ANTA products were only sold in their own stores, so I was super excited when she agreed! Since then, we’ve always stocked their hand painted stoneware pottery in contemporary Scottish designs as well as the iconic carpet bags. They blend the familiar elements of Scotland together in a way perfect for modern homes, and are popular with visitors and locals alike 💝

Today’s local maker is the very aptly named Sandra Tweedie. Sandra uses off cuts of tweed to make these fantastic flowers from her home in Tain. What could be more perfect than giving someone a flower that will never die? She also makes beautiful thistles with a bit of crochet. Her talents also extend to bags, cushions dog collars and more - anything Tweedie!! Sandra's Flowers And Gifts

One of my very favourite things in the shop is when customers say, “I haven’t seen these things anywhere else on our holiday” 🥰, because I try very hard to source original items, many of which are only sold at Ness Gifts. So I jumped at the chance when Sarah Leask | Watercolour Artist and Illustrator agreed to do a bespoke painting for us, which she has printed on to various items. Sarah is a super talented watercolour artist, originally from the Shetland Isles and now based in Aberdeen. This vibrant iteration of the view from Dores is just perfect, and reminds me of the beautiful light we get at certain times of the year as the sun starts to set and emphasises the red rock that south Loch Ness is built on. 🥰

Today’s focus is on local artist Port In My Storm Designs , from Conon Bridge. Jac is an amazingly talented artist specialising in delicate hand drawn ink illustrations. Her art was her therapy against the stresses of life, and this can be seen in the mandala type designs that became her signature style. More recently, Jac has turned her attention to The Highland Bogles. These are whimsical little characters with unique personalities due to the pretty hand drawn illustrations and 3D embellishments added to each one. Each ornament comes with its own tiny certificate of authenticity and a branded drawstring pouch. ♥️ 👻 ♥️

Today’s Local Supplier Spotlight is on Highland Skincare from Aviemore. I was lucky to spot this brand on one of my Etsy browses, and I was delighted when I contacted Charlene and she was happy to let me sell her Scottish themed body scrubs. But these aren’t just novelty - these multi use scrubs not only gently cleanse your skin with natural ingredients, they exfoliate leaving a smoother, brighter appearance. And I can confirm that no Haggis were harmed in the making of these products!

Today’s highlighted local crafter is one I’m very excited about! Annika was one of the first crafters I worked with, having seen her work at a craft fair. Her highland cow hand painted slates sold by the bucket load! Unfortunately, ill health caused her to stop painting for a few years, but I’ve kept in touch, and today was delighted that she popped in with a box of hand painted goodies and the news that she is getting her painting mojo back!! 🥳 The detail in her painting is incredible, and each piece is completely unique as she works with the shapes and texture of the materials she is painting on. She currently isn’t stocking anywhere else, so pop down and grab yourself a unique piece of hand painted art before they’re gone. Great to have you back, Annika 🥰

So let’s start with these locally made products, since they are fresh in my mind having been delivered just today by Leah Grace Creations based just over in Nairn. These mugs are more than just beautiful - they are the perfect rounded shape to wrap your fingers around on a cold day! The wooden boards are made from acacia and look beautiful in any kitchen, and the bottle stoppers are unique little items - I’d barely got them on the shelf today and one was snapped up to be taken to its new home in America. They are all unique, and come in ocean blue resin or with dried heather flowers embedded. I just love it all 😍
