A customer enquiry brought 'The Gingerbread Men' by .corrance to our attention and this horror/fantasy set in Scotland is a cracking read with a brilliant twist at the end. Definitely one for a cold, winter's night when it's snowy outside but to be honest, it is a fantastic read on warm nights too. The only sad thing is that the publisher, Haunt Publishing, has just closed down so we recommend you grab one of only two copies in stock before they're gone!

Too excited about our first delivery of books from Francis Boutle Publishers to just highlight one or two on our 'Tartan Carpet'. We want to show off our entire selection of titles covering literary gems from many cultures. Some are bilingual anthologies, some are novels in translation. All are completely amazing works including 'Sradagan san Iarmailt' edited by Mark Spencer Turner - Poet and Singer-Songwriter .

So, never mind the 'Red Carpet' which book is on our 'Tartan Carpet' this morning? Introducing Andrew Evennett's novel, 'Operation Perilous Magnetism' for 10-14 year-olds. It's set in the north of Scotland with a rather famous castle renamed as Dunbreck Castle. Five teenage members of a mountain-biking team believe they have stumbled upon some form of international espionage, but can they outwit the spies in what becomes a ruthless game of cat and mouse?

Unfortunately, we have to postpone our signing session with LG Thomson due to some unforeseen circumstances. As soon as we are able to re-schedule, we'll let you know. Apologies for any inconvenience caused to folk planning to attend Lorraine's session although we hope you'll still pop in for a wee browse round our adult and children's sections. Given the changeable weather lately, and the promise/threat of a heatwave about to descend on us, one very topical new release is Professor Trevor Harley's 'Head in the Clouds' about the effect weather has on our mental health. And if you're looking to be terrified by a murder mystery where weather and particularly clouds feature prominently in the narrative, then Helen Sedgwick 's 'When the Dead Come Calling' is for you.

This Saturday, May 23, from 11am-12pm, Market Brae Steps, we are going to have the extremely talented author and artist, LG Thomson, in store signing a selection of her books ranging from memoir to thriller and we also have two anthologies containing Lorraine's work. Don't miss this opportunity to get signed, dedicated copies and chat to an author who definitely likes to shake things up a bit with loads of attitude and gallows humour in her work. It was all a little surreal, standing in front of one of those familiar government podiums in a fabulous reception room in 10 Downing Street listening to the Prime Minister give a speech. No phones allowed inside so unfortunately no pics. The rooms were buzzing with entrepreneurs from businesses small and large, but it was also heartening to see apprentices there too, just starting their journey into the world of work. And nestled into a corner downstairs is Winston Churchill's reading chair, but only Larry the cat is allowed to sit on it! Many thanks to and Michelle Ovens for facilitating our inclusion in this wonderful event.

It's always special when an author pops into our bookshop to say hello. When Ewen Cameron appeared yesterday, it was the perfect opportunity to get him to sign copies of his book 'The Glen Nevis Rose', which tells the story of Lady Mary Cameron and the rose she took with her from Scotland to the New World as her family fled the repercussions of the Battle of Culloden. Written in collaboration with Vee Walker, this is a wonderful true story of fortitude and adventure as the displaced family soon find themselves caught up in the turmoil of the American War of Independence. For anyone with Cameron heritage, this makes an excellent gift.
