Tonight’s smasher of a dinner was local duck breasts marinated and glazed with our own honey, sweet chilli, soy sauce and garlic.

Informing the bees of news of births, deaths and other important occasions is a tradition that has dated back thousands of years,

We do it with our own bees so this was interesting to read that the Queen's bees also have this tradition and have been informed of the recent sad news.

Royal beekeeper, John Chapple, has informed the hives kept in the grounds of Buckingham Palace and Clarence House of the Queen's death. The bees were also told King Charles is now their boss.

Currently on swarm watch 👀🐝

A honeybee colony swarming is a natural process. It's the colony reproducing itself with the old queen leaving along with some of the bees. They will leave their hive and find somewhere to hang in a cluster until the scout bees decide on their new home. It can often appear dramatic and noisy with thousands of bee's flying together but they usually settle down within 15 minutes and surround the queen.

Most swarms of bee's often occur on warm Sunny days in May to the end of July, between 11am – 4pm. They are not usually aggressive if undisturbed, it is just a natural process of finding a new home and minding their own business.

If you spot a swarm in the Oldmeldrum area please do let us know. It would be helpful if you could send pictures, where safely possible to do so, the location of the swarm and the area they have landed on. And although they could land anywhere it's not always easily accessible so we may need ladders etc.
