Hello, Bonjour 👋 😁 (soon to be ‘Howdy’ as I’m off to 🇺🇸 shortly!) As you well know I think my Mr B is marvellous at many things, but cooking is definitely not his forte! (his ‘boil-in-bag’ army legacy means his cooking supper usually entails taking me out which is more than fine by me 🤩💗) so before I leave him & Meryl 🐶 for a home-alone-week I’ve been in my kitchen cooking up a few meals to ensure he survives the ordeal (& quite a few Bio eggs from the market 🐓 🥚 🍳🤣)

I’m nesting again which is a real sign of autumn drawing in … I’ve given my home a bit of an end-of-summer clean, so I thought I’d show you a few rooms starting with our ‘downstairs’ kitchen (we have another one at the top of the house - meaning the milk is never in the right fridge!)

⭐️ This is the original kitchen when we moved in - it had a rather horrible ‘mock-vielle’ affair which we quickly removed, replacing it with modern units & cupboards made of old French windows… The intention is to turn the existing kitchen window into a door to walk through to our tiny courtyard but with the rubble of putting in Air Con this spring, immediately after our Bath flat makeover, meant that I wanted a calm rubble-free summer so we’ll do it next spring! 🌈 xx
(The kitchen is to the left of the staircase which being rather grandly-gorgeous was the first thing I fell in love with on walking through our front door!)

True heroism & extreme kindness - all around us in our beautiful Cotignac ❤️

I’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of incredibly thoughtful messages from so many of you that I’ll never be able to respond to so this one is for you all - to say thank you, we’re now fine, extremely shaken & extremely grateful for all we have, for all the wonderful community we live in & for the extreme bravery of so many many ‘Sapeurs Pompiers’ 🚒 emergency response teams, pilots & even the Mayor whose wise decisions have helped save much of our beloved town 🙏

☀️… Tuesday market was as bustling & beautiful as ever, we filled our baskets with produce for the week & climbed up to our balcony to enjoy lunch & the magnificent view above (& the amusing one below!) but the air was dusty & ash began to circle around us as a welcome breeze joined the roaring summer temp. ☀️
A plume of smoke on the horizon quickly resembled a 🌪️ which spread across the forest above us looking like an early sunset of orange amid black & grey clouds: I can’t reiterate how quickly these terrible fires spread - nor the heroism & bravery of those who try to defy the flames 🔥

Two days of ‘Armageddon’ & though it appears we’re safe now, poor Ponteves & Correns & Barjols have suffered last night….

So So many have lost everything- their homes, their surroundings but thankfully as yet not their lives ❤️ It is overwhelming how as a community even unknown neighbours gather together & we’re all doing our best to support others xx I feel so so SO lucky to be among such amazing people ### 🙏🙏🙏

(Not in any way being trite - but even amid distress things can make one smile - firstly our ‘go-bag’ had very differing contents: Peter’s side had pants, strong shoes, a pair of shorts - & 🧻!!!! While I packed a precious picture of my beloved man, some scent & rather like the Romanovs ALL my jewels 😂 … Meryl 🐶 got separated from us (another story!) & spent Thursday night’s evacuation at a boutique hotel in TourTour 🤩)

The fires are not yet over & we pray for the incredibly brave Sapeurs Pompiers & for everyone affected 🫶

There’s a reason we
Simply revel in living here in Provence ☀️ … it’s because everyday holds its own unexpected magic! Yesterday it was finding ourselves masquerading as extras in a modern day Claude Berri movie 😂☀️(various other extras appeared during the day too! .. to Peter’s delight a sc****ly clad Bridget Bardo lookalike & then a couple of enormous characters who l personally wished had been a little less sc****ly clad 😂)

There we were with Robért at his magnificent ‘terrain’ (38* but with a fabulous ‘mistral’ wind … natures AC!) We’ve seen this land evolve from a field with x2 crumbling ‘cabinon’ into a Provençal paradise 👏 endless hard work & 1,000 meters of new terracing (re-using all the old stones), 200 new trees (🍋 🫒 🌰 🍊 🍐 🍑) & the hilariously hideous interior renovation of both cabinon where 🇫🇷-bad-taste has had a field day 🤣

I can’t express how much I love Robért & Gilbert 🫶 & how much we delight in the experience of just being with them … they’ve always spent hours of preparing a ‘vrai Provençal’ meal for us (I helped Robert pick leaves for a salad from a plant I’ve always discarded as a w**d, adding eye-watering amounts of garlic cloves & their own ‘huile d’olive’) awkwardly, despite the delicious taste, l frequently need to force the food down as he explains rather horrifying details such as that the cheese is made from the first milk taken from a post birth lactating sheep - or being shown a picture of yesterday’s fleshy fish as I bit in, which was both simply hideous & terrifying as he explained its size & jaw bone dimensions 🫣🤣🤣🤣

As you’ll have seen from the reel our reason for visiting Robért was to purchase from the collection of French Garden furniture he’s been gathering ❤️ It’s all fabulous & we’re thrilled with our ever growing garage-of-gardenia!… we plan on bringing it back 🇬🇧 for a French Garden Sale next spring - but if anything happens to appeal to you do let us know as it’s available to sell back in Blighty from this August … ☀️
