This breathtaking Arts & Crafts silver, gold and rock crystal brooch is unsigned, yet unmistakably the work of renowned English silversmith Bernard Instone.
Bernard Instone was born in 1891 and died in 1987, but stopped working in the 1960’s. He trained in Birmingham and Berlin and set up his own company in 1920. He was very influential in the British Arts and Crafts movement and his work is now highly respected and collected. A recently published book by Tracy Henrikson showcases his work.
Dating to around 1925, and beautifully handcrafted in the Arts & Crafts tradition, this brooch features an exquisite rock crystal cabochon in the centre, ornamented with silver leaves, pretty raised gold flowers, and five faceted rock crystal ovals.
I have scoured the internet and been unable to find another example like it. It may well have been a one-off commissioned piece.
