This breathtaking Arts & Crafts silver, gold and rock crystal brooch is unsigned, yet unmistakably the work of renowned English silversmith Bernard Instone.

Bernard Instone was born in 1891 and died in 1987, but stopped working in the 1960’s. He trained in Birmingham and Berlin and set up his own company in 1920. He was very influential in the British Arts and Crafts movement and his work is now highly respected and collected. A recently published book by Tracy Henrikson showcases his work.

Dating to around 1925, and beautifully handcrafted in the Arts & Crafts tradition, this brooch features an exquisite rock crystal cabochon in the centre, ornamented with silver leaves, pretty raised gold flowers, and five faceted rock crystal ovals.

I have scoured the internet and been unable to find another example like it. It may well have been a one-off commissioned piece.

You can find it in both my Etsy and Ruby Lane shops using the links:

Liberty of London Antique Arts and Crafts Silver Enamel and Baroque Pearl Pendant

This beautiful, silver enamel and pearl pendant dates to the Arts and Crafts period circa 1910. It was made for the famous Liberty of London. A friend owns original Liberty sketch catalogues and he was kind enough to send me the photo of the design.

The silver tests to sterling. It bears on tiny mark which is illegible.

The pierced pendant resembles a stylised peacock, a popular motif of the era. At the top is a bail attached to a ring at the top.

The oval frame is finished with fine cording. At the base is a lustrous mabe or baroque pearl with vanes radiating outwards. They end in turquoise enamel motifs with tiny silver leaves, The top silver motif looks like a rosebud. There are also little buds around the frame.

The base is finished with a baroque pearl drop.

The reverse is smoothly finished. The tiny mark is on the base of the bail.

This exquisite and very rare pendant is in fine antique condition, with only the minutest signs of age.

This exquisitely sculpted image of the Virgin Mary in profile has a halo of dark blue enamel. There is an attractive beaded surround. The signature ‘E Dropsy’ is at lower right.

At the top is a ring with a bail attached. The bail is marked ‘ORIA’. The reverse is plain ready for an engraving. It has a beaded frame.

European 835 Silver Victorian Style Leaf Bangle

This beautiful 835 silver bracelet is a bit of a mystery. The quality of silver marks it out as most likely German or Austrian but I will just call it European. As to age, it has a look of Victorian but equally it could be from the early 20th century. I just don’t know so will classify it as vintage. It is certainly very rare.

The pierced bangle has a beautiful run of engraved leaves with swirling stems. It has a double corded surround and the edge is finished with tiny silver balls.

The reverse is smoothly finished It closes with a push in clasp which holds well. It is also fitted with a safety chain. The mark ‘835’ is on the clasp.

This stunning bracelet is in fine vintage or antique condition with a lovely patina of age.

Victorian 1881 Silver with Rose Gold Overlay Shield Shaped Locket.

This superb and very rare Victorian locket bears full English, sterling silver hallmarks for the year 1881. It is overlaid with rose gold.

On the front is an exquisitely engraved spray of leaves and flowers. The flowers are overlaid with vibrant rose gold and the small leaves have a green gold overlay. At the top left is a pair of raised, rose gold bands with a prettily engraved stem of leaves between them. In true Victorian style the edge is finished with silver balls.

At the top is a beautifully shaped ring which holds a substantial bail.

The locket opens via a groove on the right side. Both sides have intact rims and covers. The interior is lined with ribbed peach silk. It closes firmly.

The reverse is plain silver apart from the hallmarks. There is a maker’s mark which looks like ‘SRRS’. The hallmarks are the date letter ‘g’ for 1881, the anchor for the Birmingham assay office and finally the lion passant for sterling silver.

Where will you ever find another locket like this? It is so beautiful and in excellent antique condition.

Norwegian David-Andersen 830 Silver Gilt Enamel Pin - Early Mark

This charming, silver enamel pin was created by the celebrated Norwegian silversmith, David Andersen, during the period circa 1900. It bears his old mark used between 1888 and 1925. It has a very light gold wash.

It is of domed construction. It is bordered with corded lines of silver gilt. Between them at the first level are balls with a pretty surround resembling flowers. Next comes a zig zag pattern. The top has a most amazing enamel pattern in a floral design with a silver k**b in the centre. There is a dark blue and white edging and then red, green and gold. Absolutely glorious!

The reverse is lightly gold washed and bears an old stye c clip. The clip bears French import marks. The back is inscribed ‘830 S’ for the quality of silver with the hammer and tongs trademark of older David-Andersen pieces.

The enamel is all intact with small signs of age on the gold, only visible in my enlarged photos. In twenty years of dealing with Norwegian silver enamel jewellery I have never before come across this piece.

In 1876 a young Norwegian goldsmith called David Andersen founded his company in Christiania, now Oslo. To this day the company works in gold and silver making the highest quality jewellery and tableware. However sadly enamelled items are no longer made.

Scottish Sterling Silver Blue Chalcedony Bracelet - Malcolm Gray

This fabulous sterling silver and blue chalcedony bracelet was made by Malcolm Gray, the founder of the celebrated Ortak silver jewellery company. It bears full Scottish hallmarks for the year 1976 and the maker’s mark .

It has four stunning blue chalcedony agate cabochons. Bezel set in silver, they are a lovely shade of dark blue but lighter when held to the light. Between them are round links echoing the shape of the chalcedony roundels. They are joined by elongated links. It closes with a ring clasp.

The back is smoothly finished. The reverse of one of the links bears the Scottish hallmarks – the lion for sterling silver, the castle for the Edinburgh assay office and the date letter ‘A’ for 1976. ‘MG’ for Malcolm Gray is present but a bit indistinct.

The attractive bracelet is in excellent vintage condition.

French Antique Three Coloured Gold Filled 'FIX' Pin

Here is a beautiful, gold filled, antique pin from France. It is marked ‘FIX, a mark founded circa 1828 by the Parisian jeweller, Savard, with a secret formula for this type of 18 carat gold filled jewellery. It is set with a single seed pearl. I am dating it to circa 1890-1900. It has three shades of gold.

The French are very familiar with the concept of elegant gold filled jewellery so thick that there are never signs of wear. The designs and quality are generally so good that they are hard to tell from their solid gold counterparts.

At the centre is a lovely, rose gold filled, floral shape set with a lustrous seed pearl. It has a pretty, pierced filigree frame in yellow gold fill. In contrast it is set with lightly engraved, green gold fleur de lis and there are four tiny green gold flowers on the edges.

You will note that it sits on a gallery, a sign of a nineteenth century piece. It is marked ‘FIX’ in a cartouche.

It has an old style c clip which carries the maker’s mark.

This captivating and very rare piece is in fine antique condition. Who would know it isn't solid gold!

English Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Nurse's Buckle

This bold and beautiful sterling silver nurse’s buckle bears full English hallmarks for the year 1911. It reflects the Art Nouveau styling of the time.

The sinuous lines of the pierced buckle are delicately engraved. It is very gently curved to mould to the waist.

The reverse divides into two with a hook over fastening. There are bars on either side to hold the fabric of the belt. The reverse is smoothly finished.

The full hallmarks appear on the left hand side. There is a maker’s mark ‘JCLtd’ and then the hallmarks - the anchor for the Birmingham assay office, the lion passant for sterling silver and finally the date letter ‘M’ for 1911. On the other side is the lin and 'M'.

This exceptional buckle is in fine antique condition.
