Today, 28th February, marks 35 years since the end of the Gulf War, the 1990โ91 campaign in which British and coalition forces served in Operation Granby during the liberation of Kuwait.
The Gulf Medal was authorised in 1992 and awarded to members of the British Armed Forces who served in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and surrounding areas during the conflict.
โข The medal is cupro-nickel, 36 mm in diameter, with the Queenโs crowned effigy on the obverse and combined service symbols on the reverse.
โข Two clasps were authorised: 2 Aug 1990 (for the Kuwait Liaison Team) and 16 Jan โ 28 Feb 1991 (for service during the core combat phase). A rosette worn on the ribbon denotes entitlement to a clasp.
โข The ribbonโs design (sand-coloured centre with dark blue, red and light blue edges) symbolises the desert landscape and the three armed services.
More than 61,000 medals and clasps were awarded to personnel and qualifying civilians who met the service requirements.
