PROUD NOT SAD💕🐂

Evening all..

As you know our pages are a place for positivity and playfulness but as we all know with farming there are ups and downs and we tend to focus on the ups rather than the downs.. why would we want our lovely followers and us to feel sad hey?!

Anyway recently it was a down for us Thompsons..! But also a very proud moment.. if that’s possible?!

We sadly lost our oldest cow of the herd recently.. She was 22! 🥺

She was the boss of the herd.. the matriarch.. born on the farm 22 years ago and made of strong hardly stuff! Not bought in but reared from birth by Farmer Dan..

When she was born Farmer Dan was 28 and taking the reins from his dad, he turns 50 next year! Sarah was 21 and had graduated from university, she’s now 43! 🤫

She had been a brilliant cow over the years, producing calves when she wanted.. we don’t artificially inseminate.. if she didn’t want to be bothered with the bull and have a bit of time off we didn’t stop her.

We don’t push our stock which is why they achieve such great ages. The average commercial beef suckler cow lives between 8-12 years and the older they get the better mothers they become and are able to birth by themselves as they know what they’re doing!

She gave birth to Henry our male calf recently who currently resides in our garden with Hazel.

After a few weeks all was ok, calf and mother were doing fine, she was fiercely maternal and tagging Henry was rather a challenge but one morning we checked on them and she just wasn’t herself and wouldn’t get up.

The high emotion and pride that we both felt knowing that she’d come to the end after us trying various things to help her but she had decided to tap out with her last calf by her side ♥️

Tears were shed and a big hug and nose rub was given knowing that she’d given her all for us and in turn we rewarded her with many lovely summers at Hawkcliffe, eating yummy June hay, looking after all her calves for more than the normal suckling timeframe and keeping her safe and warm through winter for 22 years!

We made her comfortable with lots of corn, water and hay and left her with Henry to slip away.

We never named her.. and that’s the secret to lasting so long! If you name stock they have a tenancy to die!

Anyway even though we’re hardy tough farmers we still experience emotion and this was one of those times where we had to stop and take a breath and realise our stock means everything to us!

Quite a different post this evening folks but just thought we’d share something a little close to our hearts. ♥️

Right.. enough of this mushy stuff as Farmer Dan would say! We’ve got a farm shop to prepare for opening tomorrow..

MONDAY MONDAY!! 🙌💕

The lovely Annis will be working Monday’s at the farm shop going forward now all her 3 little girls are in school and nursery! 💕💕💕

We have re stocked on our fabulous meat, pies, homebaked goodies, eggs and veg/fruit so get yourselves down to the Meat & Tatie Shed today!

We’re open every Monday going forward 10-6 and then our normal Fridays 10-6 and Saturday/Sunday 10-4

Have a fab Monday all.. what’s going on with this weather..?☀️☀️ We will be firing up the barbie next! 🤣🔥

AUTUMN HAS DEFINITELY ARRIVED! 🍁🍂

We don’t know about you but we feel Autumn has truly arrived this week!

The fire has been lit for the first time this year.. the slow cooker is out on the kitchen top and we have a big yearning for a roast beef dinner tonight when we land back home after a busy day at the shop and on the farm!

We have all sorts of yummy Sunday food options today folks at the Meat & Tatie Shed!

Just a few ideas for you…

Roast topside
Slow cooked silverside or salmon cut
Slow cooked beef brisket
Roast chicken
Roast glazed gammon with Herd & Hive honey
Sausage and red potato mash
Roast pork
Beef stews or pies

Lots more available so pop on down to the farm and fill up on your free range eggs for the week plus how about some naughty sweet treats for tonight after your Sunday lunch??!! 😋

KEIGHLEY SHOW WAS A BLAST! 💥

We had such a lovely day at Keighley & District Agricultural Show yesterday!

Much fun was had handing out leaflets and ginger biscuits from Grandma Wild's!

We talked with such great people and showed our Deutz Agrotron, Lamborghini and Unimog tractors which the kids at the show just loved! 🥰 🚜

We managed a quick look around the show and there was so much to see from livestock, horses, dogs, crafts, stalls, rides, food, drink and much more..

We bumped in the fabulous folks from Canal Side Café, Herd & Hive and Archie from Barnes of Keighley Ltd!

Hawkcliffe Farm Produce also sponsored the cattle section… 🐂

A great day supporting our local show and a big well done to all the organisers and volunteers for another great year! 👏👏💕💕
