See Klehm’s Pink Unknown evolve from Ugly Duckling to reveal her true colours… This is one of my very favourite ‘very late’ peony varieties.

Elsa Sass the Pain in My Ass. Peony farming isn’t entirely big blousy blooms. My very very latest variety of peony is my nemesis. She just won’t open properly - YET! And I have 300 (plus maybe an extra 15-20 rogues that have infiltrated the Bowl of Creams section of the field). Each year she gets a step closer but blooming heck! BLOOM!!

Tips on how to maintain FLOUER’s Sarah Bernhardt beautiful BEAST Peonies! These aren’t even fully open or expanded here. And with the sidebuds they’re going to last in your vase for an age….! Just remember with the heat that’s coming and to prolong vaselife: Fill up your vase with plenty of cold water - there should be at least 4 to 6 inches of water in your vase, minimum, as the whole length of that submerged stem will drink and they’re thirsty girls! These massive blooms need constant hydration to continue blooming to the very end and ultimately open their sidebuds after the main bloom has dropped its petals. So, to reduce transpiration (loss of water via the petals and leaves) DON’T place the flowers on a hot and sunny windowsill, in a hot kitchen or near a radiator. They love cool places. And if it gets really hot - ie a heatwave - they actually love sitting in a vase on your garden table. You can put them outside at night as the cooler air and ambient moisture and dew regenerates and hydrates them all around. Every now and then a fresh little snip of a mm or two from the end and fresh clean water - but you don’t need to go crazy and keep cutting bits off as long as they’re somewhere coo and look happyl. Unless things look really droopy - then cut the stem much shorter and put them in cold water, somewhere cool and dark for a couple of hours and they’ll recover. You can even put your vase in the fridge - if it’s big enough (the fridge that is). Once the main bud drops its petals, cut the top of that buds stem down to the next branch and then the remaining sidebuds will bloom and continue the PEONY PARTY.

Rose Turkish Delight Scented ‘Nancy Nora’. One of my late varieties (not as late as some but I can cut her for a full week to 10 days as she holds her buds for a while). Looks quite simple as she’s opening - they’re not massive/dense buds. But bloomin heck, she goes on and expands once she opens. And the rose sugary scent genuinely is unmatched in my opinion. One from my Premium Collection. I will be closing postal orders end of Sunday with final dispatch next Weds 24th latest (if not before). But we will have peonies on the wagons (and at Kelso Farmer’s Market) beyond until we sell out.

10pm Candy Stripe Cut! These Candy Stripe Peonies are going to be dried for use in a Christmas Floristry Workshop. Idea entirely adopted (stolen) from the boss of dried flower design . She’s right! Candy Stripe peonies make AMAZING dried flowers. They have quite a short petal length so I find them frustrating in their fresh form. They’re just not quite as impressive as they could be if the petals were that bit longer - like that of a Rembrandt tulip. But that’s probably why they make such great dried flowers as they hold their form well, dry quickly and look rather neat and petite - while candy cane stripy.

BIG BRITISH PEONIES! No trickery needed. Our peonies really are this big and blousy in full bloom. We have a really nice group for Friday Night’s Peony Bouquet Workshop at The Hirsel Estate’s Walled Garden, but have plenty of space so if you fancy making a Big Blousy Peony Bouquet in the gorgeous surroundings on this historic estate, you can sign up on our website. The more the merrier for our Peony Garden Party! 12th June, 6pm to 8.30pm, The Hirsel Estate’s Walled Garden, Coldstream, Scottish Borders. Bring your own nibbles and fizz etc if you wish. This will be a fun and relaxed floristry workshop with flowers, foliage and some VERY SPECIAL PEONIES grown by me - Zena - on our farm by Kelso in the Scottish Borders.
