TW - BABY LOSS

The raw, and unfiltered pain we have been through to get right to this moment.

Tonight we are the feature on ITV for the Pride of Britain Awards. It’s a bittersweet moment. The recognition to us is everything, but I’d rather have our son living.

I wish Romeo was here every single moment. The second we walked through those doors in labour after spending 9 months imagining the rest of our lives with him to be told ‘I’m sorry, your babies dead’ broke us forever. Our wedding we’d booked, the holidays we’d book, the nursery we’d prepared. Every item laid out in our home ready to use. Except we walked through the door with a stillborn. We’ve done nothing we’d planned with Romeo. The wedding was cancelled, the holidays cancelled, our honeymoon cancelled. We couldn’t face it. We couldn’t carry on a life pretending we could do the things we’d imagined with him. Instead our loss rearranged our whole lives.

We have worked ourselves to the absolute core to raise the £30,000 we have raised. It has not at all been easy. It’s become our lives. We’ve fought for every single press article. Few have willingly shared our story. It’s too much taboo. Except it’s not uncommon. Baby loss is so common. Stillbirth is so common. It isn’t a rare phenomenon. 1 in 250 babies in the U.K. are stillborn.

I’m so rarely so vulnerable about the fact some days the grief sweeps me off my feet. Our lives are totally altered as a result of our loss, and it quickly became very loud who genuinely cares. The gestures and love shown by once strangers. Many once strangers that have become friends. The littlest of gestures that mean the biggest of things. The community of being a loss mum is a club no one ever wants to join, it’s thrown upon you and from then onwards you’re just treading water day by day. Trying to survive the horrible reality of the hand you’ve been dealt 💙

It’s so so incredible seeing all the finalists for the Pride of Britain Fundraiser of the Year! Every single person shortlisted is so worthy and deserving. I genuinely don’t believe there is anyone more deserving than another! Every single person nominated is nothing short of incredible and so deserving of the recognition.

It still seems so surreal that just 18 months ago we walked into the hospital in labour at full term expecting to leave with our baby, and that turned into a tragedy that resulted in this. Over £30,000 in baby loss equipment to give families the gift of time with their babies that they otherwise wouldn’t have just seems mind-blowing, even to us. Romeo’s name will forever be a part of our day to day lives. I know the impact of what we’ve achieved has benefited so many in allowing time to grieve. I’ve met them, I’ve spoken to them. From the fundraising, to the handovers, the emotional toll has been unbearable at times. Standing in front of audiences of hundreds talking about your baby you gave birth to stillborn is something I never imagined I’d do. You’d never imagine it will be you, until it is. The equipment we provide you never know how precious it is, until it’s too late.

I feel rich, rich that we got shortlisted as a finalist. I feel so grateful that our tragedy can impact others and everything we’ve done, we’ve done it for Romeo. This is our way of keeping our beautiful baby boy alive 💙

We’ve been keeping a MASSIVE secret….

In early August we were contacted by ITV to film a short documentary about Remembering Romeo as we are shortlisted as finalists for The Pride Of Britain.

We’re so excited to finally be able to share our documentary! Thank you so much for every single person that supported this journey whether you’ve been here from the very start, or since yesterday!

I can’t believe in just 13 months since we began this journey we have raised over £30,000. It’s been far from a walk in the park whilst navigating the loss of Romeo full term stillborn after he died in labour and, a high risk pregancy after loss with Rainbow Reggie. I’m so incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved, and the real impact Romeo’s having on other families. Sorting masses of donated baby goods whilst trying to conceive after a full term loss is not at all for the faint hearted.

We’re super excited, and grateful for such an incredible opportunity 🤞

** please note, we did not turn up for an appointment. We turned up in the depths of labour at 6cm dilated after labouring for hours at home to be told Romeo had no trace of a heartbeat. We very much arrived at the hospital expecting to go home our baby alive. He was alive when I went onto labour.

They’re open for their last day of the season today! So it’s your final day to get picking. Can’t wait to see them back next year 💃

Aria and Leo throughly enjoyed painting and picking. Romeo ended up in amongst the flowers a few times walking around with Leo 🤦‍♀️ They didn’t want to join in our big bunch, as they took to all the teeny tiny flowers. The butterflies and the bees were thriving!

Butterflies are really special to us, as we did a butterfly release at Romeo’s funeral and since then we’ve had lots of really weird and wonderful butterfly encounters. We’re even had one on our Christmas Tree last year!

Simply beautiful 😍

We’ll be back next year, thank you 💙

What a privilege to be invited along to the Co-op Funeral Care Kendal’s open day yesterday! Thank you to everyone that came along and supported their event.

It was an incredible opportunity to see behind the scenes of how the home operates, their facilities and the faces behind it all. It was a real ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity. I’m quite deep in the world of baby loss, but this was still equally fascinating and educational.

Before we lost Romeo, the idea of going into a funeral home would have left me uneasy. It’s very true, losing a child erases your fear of death. It alters your brain chemistry. This is something I’d have never entertained before we lost Romeo.

Having the opportunity to see all the ‘behind the scenes’ is just fascinating but also the opportunity to ask questions without judgement. I feel as a society we fear death, and talking about death when it’s inevitable. These real life super hero’s deal with it, with such compassion day in and day out. It really is an incredible profession.
