Ranunculus they are fluffy, ruffled divas but it wouldn’t be spring without them. They are one of your favourite flowers for weddings, bouquets and florists, flower farmers and flower lovers adore them ♥️

They are a tricky crop for a flower farmer to grow as the mice love the corms, germination can be tricky and there is always the question of have I watered them enough or too much
Then if you have managed to get them to survive that far, spring comes and it gets hot they all start to open at once 😂
So a couple of years ago I followed the guidance of and grew them in make shift low tunnels and what a difference this made

They don’t mind a bit of cold, you can control how much they are covered by lifting the sides and giving them more air, then when it gets to hot the covers can be removed

It has taken years for us to get these to grow well and there have been tears when it didn’t go well, so it didn’t happen overnight night it took time and perseverance

How have your ranuculas grown this year? What would you say your top tips are?

You’re a flower farmer or florist and you have planted pansies this year and you want to use them as cut flowers..
Then remove the flowers so the stems get longer, they will soon turn into bud vase height and then into bouquet length 🙌
I have to thank my friend Lucy for getting me to love these for more than just edible flowers and way before they came into fashion last year, she was ahead of the game in so many ways

I think we are all obsessed with them and I’m excited for you to be using them in your florist work ♥️

Do you remember me dancing on top of the power pole last year? After 5 years of backwards and forwards with the electric company they were relocated out of our flower farm
So we decided that we would dig the pole out, what an absolute mission 🤦‍♀️ weeks of digging through soil and stone!! Thinking we would never find the bottom of it 😂 we finally got it out 🙌
It means we can terrace the last slope so we can grow even more flowers.. more volume and choice for florists and floral designers, more beautiful bouquets of flowers
I did a very big happy dance when we finally got this pole out, I think we won’t bother with the other two poles 😂

I want to take a moment to talk about edible flowers and my absolute love for them..

I found edible flowers years before cut flowers when we used to grow salads and we wanted a different flavour to add to the salads so enter the edible flower part.

Borage tasting like cucumbers, rose petals with their sweet floral notes and violas with a subtle candy taste just to name a few

If a flower is chosen to be picked for an edible flower punnet it has to be perfect, because these beauties are admired up close as they adorn carefully crafted wedding cakes and float in your cocktails

Free from chemicals and pesticides they are a million miles away from the imported flowers that shouldn’t be added to cakes although all roses are edible we treat ours to nothing but nature which is not how an imported rose is treated! So think twice before asking a florist to use the same flowers they are using and ask us for help and advice.

Anyone can buy edible flowers but I work with some extremely talented cake bakers and makers.
Collection only because we don’t post them, although I’m always tempted to try postal 😬

Dreamy edible flowers I love you 🥰 do you love them as much as I do…

I know its cold out there and I’m sure some of you have snow but there are always little jobs that can be done on the flower farm…

We don’t go out too early and wait for it to warm up as nothing is fun in minus 1 😂

Sweet peas can be sown again or for the first time if you forgot to start them in autumn, one of my favourite wedding flowers ♥️
Ranuculas and anemones, we have started our second round of them this week so we have them flowering till May
Mulching beds with good quality compost ready for spring planting and topping up the periennial beds, its a good job to keep warm
W**d and uncover emerging bulbs so that they get the best start
Start garden project as there is never time once the year starts
But most of all, go see if you can find any flowers flowering, cut them and enjoy them for yourself when you’re having a moment to relax

I’m going to try and make a couple of reels a month showing you the jobs that we are doing on the flower farm to hopefully help you or inspire you to get out in your garden and enjoy nature and the fresh air
