The two-day hearing started today

If you’ve noticed your windscreen is suspiciously spotless these days after a long motorway journey, you aren't imagining things.
Since 1996, insect populations have plummeted globally—with some regions reporting a staggering 75%+ decline in flying insect biomass. It’s a phenomenon scientists literally call the "windscreen effect," and it’s a terrifyingly quiet indicator of biodiversity loss.

And before anyone says "it’s just better car aerodynamics" Let's bust that myth right now. Sleek, aerodynamic cars existed in 1996 (think of the Vauxhall Calibra or the Audi A4). Aerodynamics isn't a 21st-century invention—the harsh reality is simply that the bugs are gone.

Without these tiny creatures, our entire ecosystem—from pollination to the food chains that support birds and mammals—starts to collapse.

Opossums live short, challenging lives, but every night they quietly help keep nature in balance.

Most wild opossums survive only one to two years. Under the cover of darkness, they travel through forests, neighborhoods, and backyards searching for food while avoiding traffic, predators, harsh weather, and other dangers. Their lives may be brief, but their impact is remarkable.

These often misunderstood animals are nature’s cleanup crew. They feed on insects, pests, carrion, and even venomous snakes. By consuming large numbers of ticks, they can also help reduce the spread of certain diseases.

Despite their important role, opossums are often feared because of their appearance or nocturnal habits. In reality, they are shy and non-aggressive. When frightened, they usually freeze, hiss, drool, or play dead as a defense mechanism rather than fight.

A little kindness goes a long way. Give them space, avoid harming them, and slow down if you spot one near the road. They are simply doing the job nature intended.

Opossums may not live long, but they leave the world a little cleaner than they found it. 🦝🌙🍃💚🐾
