What does it mean to be ‘adopted’? The word itself has many meanings, but is primarily taken as either legally taking charge of another’s child, or taking on a task/responsibility. However, for that child, it can take on more - feelings of security and protection, perhaps? And what is not often shown in the media, the waiting and hoping to be adopted, and the anticipation of finally going home.

We all know the story, or at least a variation of it, from the news. Drugs, Alcohol, Bloodshed - the papers are often full of it. Common themes include gangs, angry youths, and destroyed lives, often closely followed by court dates, jail time, and, in most cases, deaths. So, how do we break the cycle? Change the story?

The answer to this vital question can be found in Nicky Cruz’ book: Run Baby Run - Nicky’s autobiography. In his book, Nicky talks about how his life was turned around by David Wilkerson (author of The Cross and The Switchblade, our book of the month back in April last year).

This month, we are looking at the Who, What, Why series, which explores how God’s people have been shaped throughout history. Although set for children, this series works as a nice refresher for adults, too!

For this month, we’re going back to the basics. And by that, we mean probably one of the most basic foundations of Christianity: Prayer. As a Priest once asked a General, ‘how do you know what your orders are, if you do not talk to your Superior?’ So it is also with Christians. Sometimes, the best books to read are children’s books, like The Hobbit, or the Narnia Series. Not only do they have an action-packed adventure, lovable characters and a side of hilarity, they also are easy to read, hard to put down, and tell the reader important facts and lessons.

So, it may not be surprising that this month, we’re embracing our younger sides, and reading Danika Cooley’s book, ‘Why Did the Resurrection Happen?’ a truly captivating retelling of the journey of the women who discovered the empty tomb, the quest to find the risen Jesus, and Jesus’ various appearances to his followers over the 40 days. New year, new you? At least, that's the mantra everyone says around this time of year. And so, many dutifully make our lists, some sign up for gyms, others buy in a lot of fruit and veg for new diets, and by the end of the month, its business as usual (except for the chosen few who manage to continue their new regimes).

But for the rest of us, our Resolutions have faded into nothing but a distance memory, as humans often do with things they don't particularly want to remember. And, of course, we all know the additive about good intentions…

Quite often in this day and age, we are asked to make a choice: science, or God. We are told that if we believe and trust in science, then God does not exist, as science can explain what our ancestors could not. That God (or pagan gods) were believed in as a way to understand and explain what humans couldn’t.

However! As well-respected scientist Ransom’s book shows, science CANNOT omit the possibility of a Creator. Yes, the universe contains all the needed components, but who built them in the first place? Indeed, as you dive deeper into science, the universe itself points to a Creator.
