The humble runner bean is considered an easy win in UK gardens. Whether you’re new to growing your own or an old hat, the process of sowing runner beans and reaping the rewards at harvest time is often a smooth one – but only with the right advice!
June is the perfect time to sow runner bean seeds or plant out seedlings. It takes just 12 to 16 weeks for a runner bean seed to become ready to harvest, with germination taking as little as 5 to 7 days.

Time watering well
It’s not just support runner beans need to succeed. They are known for being very, very thirsty, but remember, there’s a fine line between moist and waterlogged soil, especially when growing runner beans in containers. Balance regular watering with a layer or two of mulch to retain moisture.

Harvest when young
It is important to time your harvest right too. The best flavour comes from young, stringless pods that are around 15 to 20 cm in length. Picking your runner beans regularly encourages your plant to produce more flowers, which means a bountiful harvest for you! If you miss this window, don’t worry; old beans should still be picked to prolong production.

If you have more runner beans than you can eat, don’t forget that runner beans freeze well, meaning you get to enjoy them long after summer has been and gone.

Looking for something to support your runners beans? Look no further than one of our fantastic Obelisks.

Sow at the right time
While sowing seeds during early spring should be done indoors, runner bean seeds can be directly sown outside from late May to July. Pick a sunny, sheltered spot for planting seeds out, preferably in weed-free soil that’s been enriched with well-rotted compost or manure.
As well as planting directly in the ground or your veggie patch, runner bean seeds do particularly well in containers. Containers should be large in size however for the best results. Sow your seeds 5cm deep and at least 30cm apart.

Support your seedlings
Runner beans need a lot of support, with some varieties able to reach 6 to 10 feet in height if the support and growing conditions are right.
When picking the perfect support, make sure it is as sturdy as possible. Swap traditional canes for beautiful, long lasting obelisks to create a feature of your growing runner beans as well as provide the best support.

An obelisk is a wonderful addition to the average UK garden for a long list of reasons. This beautiful and rather elegant support structure delivers instant drama to any planting scheme, providing a feast for the senses as well as a great base to add interest vertically.
Obelisks are particularly popular in more compact gardens. But, whatever the size or shape of your outdoor space, an obelisk can serve as a stunning focal point all year round. Even after foliage has died off, the obelisk itself is a lovely, sculptural feature that really makes a space. An obelisk is also practically perfect, supporting climbing plants, keeping foliage tidy and manageable, and encouraging the airflow that keeps plant life healthy and happy.
If we’ve convinced you that adding an obelisk is the right next step for your spring garden, you’re going to need some plants to fill it.

With their intricate look, incredible colour and great variety, dahlias are popular additions to UK gardens as well as top choices for those who enjoy cut flowers. With wildlife also loving this extra special bloom, growing them in your garden this spring really is a no brainer. Yet, with dahlias having a reputation for being difficult to grow, many choose not to.
Adding this showstopper to your garden doesn’t have to be tricky however, especially if you follow our top dahlia growing tips below…
Plant at the right time
Whether growing from seed, stored tubers or pre-grown potted plants, the best time to plant your dahlias outdoors is after the frosts have passed during mid-spring. When planting your dahlias, leave plenty of space in between each. Dahlias need room to grow and, once in full bloom, fill out these gaps beautifully to ensure elegant and full displays.
Water them well
After planting, water well, covering with a layer of mulch to keep that moisture in. Dahlias need regular watering to flourish, especially during their growing season.
Fast growth can also be promoted with additional feeding. Ground planted dahlias should be mulched, while container grown plants benefit from potassium-rich or tomato feed applied every two weeks from July to September.
Support your showstoppers
For taller dahlia varieties in particular, the right support is crucial to healthy growth and happy plants.
As dahlias are very top-heavy, they need the help of plant supports to stay upright. Most varieties can reach up to 1.2 metres in height, and some climb beyond this to over 2 metres. Keep them looking beautiful by shopping for plant supports with us.
