A Remarkable Early Jurassic Fossil Site Revealed
Around 183 million years ago, during the Toarcian stage of the Early Jurassic, layers of clay and hard limestone nodules were deposited in what is now Gloucestershire, England. These sediments formed in a shallow marine environment and are especially important because many of the limestone nodules preserved fossils in exceptional detail, protecting them from later erosion and crushing.
This significant fossil site near Kings Stanley, close to Stroud, was discovered by renowned amateur fossil hunters Neville and Sally Hollingworth. The couple are well known in British paleontology and previously made headlines after uncovering mammoth remains in the nearby Cotswold Water Park, a discovery featured in the 2021 BBC One documentary “Attenborough and the Mammoth Graveyard.”
The newly exposed Jurassic layers have proven to be scientifically valuable. According to the Hollingworths, the clay beds at this site have yielded a rich assemblage of well-preserved marine vertebrate fossils, including fish and marine reptiles. The quality of preservation is comparable to that of the famous Strawberry Bank Lagerstätte in Somerset—one of the UK’s most important fossil sites, known for preserving entire skeletons and soft-tissue impressions.
What makes the Kings Stanley site particularly special is that excavations have uncovered fossils from a rare rock layer that had not been exposed since the late 19th century. This long-buried layer offers scientists a fresh window into Early Jurassic marine ecosystems at a time marked by major environmental changes, including ocean warming and low oxygen events.
Overall, the discovery highlights the continued importance of careful fieldwork and collaboration between professional scientists and dedicated fossil collectors. Sites like this not only expand our understanding of Jurassic marine life but also help reconstruct ancient environments with remarkable precision.
