Sometimes you can sit in a saddle and think, “wow, this feels amazing, this is the one”.

You feel balanced, your position feels natural and you immediately feel more secure in the saddle. It can be very tempting to assume that because it feels so good to you, it must be the right choice for your horse too.

Rider comfort is only one part of the picture.

A saddle can feel fantastic from the rider’s perspective while still not providing the support, freedom or balance your horse needs. This is why an experienced saddle fitter needs to look beyond how a saddle feels when you sit in it and assess how it is working with your horse’s individual shape, movement and build.

And if the saddle isn’t the right option, you shouldn’t simply be told “it doesn’t fit”... You deserve to understand why.

That might mean looking at how your horse’s shoulder moves, how the saddle behaves when they’re working, where the weight is being distributed or how the saddle is influencing your own position.

Our role is to bring all of those pieces together and explain what we’re seeing, so you can make an informed decision rather than simply being asked to trust our judgement.

Sometimes the saddle you love as a rider isn’t the saddle your horse needs, and understanding the difference is part of what you’re paying an experienced saddle fitter for.

Watching your horse move is key to our saddle fitting appointments

A saddle fitting should never be simply checking whether a saddle appears to fit the horse when they are standing still. The saddle is part of a much bigger picture, and understanding whether it is genuinely supporting your partnership requires us to look at both horse and rider, statically and dynamically.

We start by building a complete picture of your horse. Their conformation, build, symmetry, movement and way of going, all tell us something about what they need from their saddle.

We also need to understand their workload, their stage of training and any changes you have noticed. Then we bring you as the rider into that picture, considering your balance, position, goals and how you need your saddle to support you.

From there, we assess how everything works together. We watch your horse move, look at how the saddle behaves dynamically and pay close attention to the interaction between horse, saddle and rider.

It is often the small details that provide the most useful information.

A slight change in rhythm, a subtle reluctance to move forward, a shoulder that isn’t moving as freely as it should, or a rider who continually adjusts their position without quite knowing why.

Individually, these things might seem insignificant, but an experienced fitter knows when they warrant further investigation.

This is where a trained eye really matters. Experience allows you to recognise patterns and notice small changes that may otherwise be overlooked, giving you the opportunity to address them before they develop into more significant problems.

Our role is to understand your partnership and make a considered recommendation based on what we see.

We always ask ourselves, “is this saddle allowing this horse and rider to move comfortably, effectively and confidently together?”

That is the level of detail we believe professional saddle fitting should involve. DM us the word “EXPERT” to find out more about our approach.

Finding the right saddle isn’t about choosing the most popular brand or simply picking what’s available on the day. It’s about finding the option that works for your horse.

That’s why we’re proud to work alongside The Saddle Bank.

Our partnership gives us the ability to offer a more personalised approach, with more options for horse and rider.

The Saddle Bank is one of the UK’s leading online saddle retailers, offering a wide range of new and used saddles from multiple brands.

They work alongside independent saddle fitters, helping owners access more choice when searching for the right saddle solution.

Their extensive range of saddles gives us more flexibility when exploring options, meaning we can focus on what genuinely suits your horse and rider rather than being restricted by limited choice.

Every horse is different. Having access to a wider range of brands and styles means we’re not trying to make one saddle fit a horse it wasn’t designed for.

The result?

A more personalised saddle search. More options to consider. And the confidence that your saddle has been chosen because it supports your horse, not because it was the only option available.

What happens if your saddle is fine?

We’ll tell you!

A professional saddle fitting isn’t about changing things for the sake of it. Sometimes the most valuable outcome is the reassurance that your current saddle is still supporting you and your horse exactly as it should.

If we spot a small adjustment that could improve comfort, we’ll make it.

If everything is working well, we’ll explain why.

And we’ll always leave you with the knowledge of what subtle changes to look out for as your horse continues to develop and change.

Confidence comes from understanding, not from unnecessary changes.

Save this as your reminder that the right saddle advice isn’t always about finding something new.

I spend most of my days helping other people’s horses feel happier and more comfortable in their saddles. It’s a job that I absolutely love, it’s so rewarding and the feeling of seeing a horse be able to move freely is just unmatched.

But it’s still really important for me to switch off and fill my cup so that I can keep helping horses.

So, I go to ride Indie.

It gives me time to switch off from work, stop analysing every saddle, numnah and girth and enjoy having a horse of my own.

I ride in a Devoucoux saddle, a monoflap close contact jump saddle, with a Stubben equi soft sheepskin girth and a mattes shim pad underneath.

Even though I don’t jump I have long legs and like the close contact feel of the saddle.

The panels for Indie are supportive and wide to distribute the pressure of the saddle. The gullet is wide and allows plenty of room for the shoulders and across her back.

When I’m not working, we regularly go to Boughton house hacking (where you can buy an annual pass), arena hires around the local area, and on the occasional fun ride

These photos are of hacking at Boughton House!

Your horse doesn’t care what logo is on your saddle. They don’t care if it’s the most popular brand, the one everyone at the yard is using or the one with the biggest reputation.

Just like they don’t care what you look like, what colour their saddle pad is or what brand of shavings are in their stable.

But they do care about how those things make them feel.

They notice when their saddle allows them to move freely. They notice if their saddle pad rubs or restricts them. They notice whether their shavings are dusty or comfortable. They notice the energy you bring to each ride.

Horses don’t see brands. They don’t recognise logos or price tags. They know how things FEEL.

Double tap if you agree ♥️

The best answer isn’t always a new saddle.

One of the most valuable things a saddle fitter can give you is confidence in what you already have.

Not every appointment leads to a change.

Sometimes we find that your saddle simply needs a small adjustment to continue supporting your horse as they develop. Sometimes a reflock brings everything back into balance. And sometimes, after a thorough assessment, the answer is that your saddle is already doing exactly what it should.

Knowing when to change something is important, but knowing when not to change something is just as valuable.

A great saddle fitting isn’t about finding a reason to replace your saddle. It’s about having the knowledge and experience to understand what your horse actually needs.

A premium saddle fitting experience isn’t just about the saddle.

It’s about the entire process.

From the first conversation, we believe owners should feel listened to, supported and confident that every decision is being made with their horse in mind.

That means taking the time to understand your horse as an individual, assessing how they move, discussing your goals and explaining the reasoning behind every recommendation.

Our relationship with The Saddle Bank allows us to take this one step further. Rather than being limited to the saddles available on the day, we can work with owners to explore options they would specifically like us to bring and assess.

This creates a more personalised, bespoke experience, giving horse and rider the opportunity to find the right match, rather than settling for what happens to be available.

Because the best saddle fitting experience isn’t about leaving with a saddle, It’s about leaving with confidence. Confidence that your horse is comfortable, that your questions have been answered and that you have a solution designed around your partnership.

You have three saddles in front of you. They’re all from reputable brands. They all appear to fit your horse. On paper, they all look like they could be the right choice.

So how do you decide?

For many owners, this is where it becomes about the brand, the price, what a friend recommends, or which saddle feels the nicest when they first sit in it. But the truth is, saddle fitting doesn’t end when a saddle looks right standing still.

A horse’s body is designed to move. Their shoulders need freedom, their back changes shape through the stride, and their muscles engage differently when they’re working compared to when they’re standing in the stable.

This is where experience and a trained eye become so important.

A saddle may appear to fit perfectly during an assessment, but if it restricts movement once your horse is working, it isn’t truly supporting them.

Perhaps they start feeling different to ride. Maybe their way of going changes. Maybe that horse who was jumping confidently suddenly starts knocking poles or struggling to maintain their balance.

The saddle wasn’t necessarily “wrong” on paper.

It just wasn’t the right solution for that individual horse.

This is why we don’t believe in choosing a saddle based on brand alone. The best saddle isn’t the one everyone else is using or the one with the biggest name. It’s the one that allows your horse to move comfortably, freely and confidently in the way they were designed to.

Save this post as your reminder that your horse’s saddle should support them in every way, not just “fit” on paper.

When it comes to saddle fitting, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution.

Every horse is different. Their conformation, movement, muscle development, workload and the way they carry their rider all influence what they need from a saddle. That’s why we believe your saddle fitter should have the freedom to recommend what is genuinely best for your horse, rather than being limited to one brand or one range of saddles.

Being independent means our recommendations are never driven by a particular manufacturer. They are based on the horse standing in front of us and finding the solution that gives them the best opportunity to move comfortably and perform at their best.

Our relationship with The Saddle Bank gives us even greater choice, allowing us to explore saddles from a wide range of brands and find the option that truly suits both horse and rider.

The important thing is that the decision is made because it’s right for your horse, not because it’s the only option available.

Independence isn’t about selling more saddles, it’s about having the freedom to put the horse first, every single time.
