Author action! We were DELIGHTED to welcome the fabulous Gareth Hopkins to the Harbour Bookshop!
Cliff spends his time at the old lighthouse, until one day a bird lands on his head and refuses to leave.  Cliff wasn’t sure at first. Then after a while, having a seagull on his head just felt right. Wherever Cliff’s head went . . .the seagull went too.

Football superstar Erling Haaland scored a winning goal for book lovers by donating an incredibly rare Viking book to his hometown library in Bryne, Norway.

This isn't just any book – it's a 1594 printed edition of works by the legendary 13th-century historian Snorri Sturluson, featuring captivating medieval tales of Viking kings, queens, farmers, and warriors. Believed to be the ONLY surviving copy in existence, Haaland originally purchased this treasure for a record-breaking £100,000 – the highest price ever paid for a book in Norway!

The Harbour Bookshop in Kingsbridge.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲.

On January 18th, 1882, A. A Milne, creator of Winnie the Pooh, was born.

His stories, set in the Hundred Acre Wood, have enchanted generations of children with tales of Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore the Donkey, Tigger, and a human character based on his own son, Christopher Robin Milne.

Christopher Robin and his wife moved from London to Stoke Fleming in 1951 and soon opened the Dartmouth’s Harbour Bookshop. In 1984, Kingsbridge’s Harbour Bookshop, a sister to the Dartmouth shop, opened its doors.

While the Dartmouth shop closed its doors after 60 years in 2011, Kingsbridge’s Harbour Bookshop is still going strong and is proud of its rich history, featuring the below inspirational quote from A. A Milne on their website.

This is a mindset Harbour Bookshop and its owner Jane embody, with the store going from strength to strength in recent years, including being a 2024 regional and country finalist in The British Book Awards Independent Bookshop of the Year.

Our biggest customers aren’t who you’d expect - it’s the under-25 crew, and we are absolutely here for it!

While everyone’s been wringing their hands about “kids these days,” this brilliant generation has been quietly showing us exactly how it’s done. They’ve seen through the smoke and mirrors of digital marketing that promises perfection but delivers... well, let’s just say disappointment wrapped in glossy packaging.

They want the REAL thing. The smell of paper, the weight of words, the serendipity of stumbling across their next favourite book while browsing our shelves. They’re laying down their hard-earned cash (and we know how hard-earned it is!) for authentic experiences that can’t be filtered or photoshopped.

They’re library champions, book-sharing legends, and second-hand shop heroes. They understand that books are meant to be loved, shared, and passed along like literary heirlooms.

So while the doom-and-gloom brigade keeps predicting the death of bookshops, we’re over here watching Gen Z prove them spectacularly wrong.

The future of independent bookshops? It’s in excellent hands. ✨
