The Autumnal Shift

Autumn is easily one of the trickiest stretches in the carp‑fishing calendar. Most waters you’ll fish have already taken seven or eight months of steady angling pressure — and as a result, the fish get incredibly wary, especially of tactics and baits they’ve seen over and over all season. Even methods that worked flawlessly earlier in the year will suddenly stop getting those bites.

That being said, autumn’s also when lakes can absolutely explode into life; it’s one of the very best times to catch your biggest fish right before winter sets in. But one thing I’ve learned for certain.
You’ve got to change your approach to keep succeeding.

When changing my own angling approach i revert to ones that’ve consistently delivered results year‑after‑year, which ofcourse will vary lake to lake, but whether that be a change of bait volume, or a change in rigs to target alternative areas of the lake where carp are more likely to hold up.
Through falling temperatures and all the unpredictability this season brings adjusting your own approach can certainly keep those bites coming.

My absolute top autumn choice?

Go for a proper food‑source bait — and for me that means a premium‑quality fishmeal base. I use fishmeal all year round, but it really comes into its own as we head deeper into autumn when the nights and mornings turn crisp, winter’s drawing near, and the carp instinctively know they need to pack away serious energy reserves to get through the cold ahead.
