Numbers and trade continue to increase for the spring lambs with firms now looking for increased numbers of lamb. An overall average of 476.87p/kg was achieved with an SQQ average of 481.5p and ยฃ205.96 per head.

This section topped at ยฃ234 for a 46kg Texel cross lamb from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm Ormside and was purchased by Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall, Kirkby Stephen sold a a pen of ten 42kg Charollais lambs to make ยฃ213 (507.1p) and also sold a pair of 39kg Beltex cross lamb to top the pence per kilo at 538.5p totalling ยฃ210.

Messrs Slee, Street House, Kirkby Thore sold a 45kg Texel cross hogg to make ยฃ219 (486.7p/kg).

Suffolk lambs topped at ยฃ207.50 for a pen of 44kg from Messrs Wilson, Searchlight Farm, Middlesborough.

Messrs Chippendale, Wharton Hall, Kirkby Stephen sold a pair of Suffolk cross ewes to make ยฃ250. This home also sold Charollais ewes to make ยฃ230.

An overall sale average of 412.6p/kg with a SQQ average of 429p/kg and a whopping ยฃ200.94 per head was achieved for 2,872 hoggs sold which included 1135 horned hoggs.

The sale topped at ยฃ271 for a Beltex cross hogg from Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall, Kirkby Stephen. This home also sold Rouge hoggs to make ยฃ267.

Topping the pence per kilo at 520.8p was a pen of seven 48kg Beltex cross hoggs totalling ยฃ250 from Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York. This home also sold 60kg Beltex cross hoggs to make ยฃ260 (433.3p/kg) and 61kg Beltex cross hoggs to make ยฃ253 (414.8p).

The consignment of 95 Texel, Suffolk and Beltex hoggs from this home sold to average 53.9kg ยฃ235.06 (435.8p).

Heavy hoggs sold exceptionally well and saw this biggest increase with Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall, Staffield selling a pen of thirteen heavy Charollais hoggs to make ยฃ270.50, with another pen of twelve making ยฃ264 and a pen of fourteen heavy Texel hoggs making ยฃ262.50. The consignment of 79 heavy Charollais and Texel hoggs from this home sold to average ยฃ260.46.

New Fair Show and Sale of Sheep with lambs at foot.

Topping the sale at ยฃ205 per life and ยฃ410 per outfit were a pen of five Beltex cross shearlings with lambs at foot from Messrs Browell & Sons, Quarry House Farm, Hexham and was purchased by Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby.

The first prize pen of continental hoggs was awarded to a pen of Texel cross hoggs with lambs at foot from Ben Atkinson, Lady Anne Drive, Brough which went on to sell for ยฃ200 per life, ยฃ400 per outfit.

The first prize pen of ten Mule hoggs with lambs at foot sold to ยฃ170 per head (ยฃ340 per outfit) from Messrs Lancaster, Roseleigh, Appleby selling to the judge. This home also received the second prize rosette with another pen of ten Mule hoggs with lambs at foot also to make ยฃ170 per head (ยฃ340 per outfit) to Messrs Gill, Barnard Castle.

Swaledale ewes with Mule lambs at foot sold to ยฃ150 per head (ยฃ300 per outfit) from Messrs Hutchinson, Bail Hill, Forest in Teesdale selling to Messrs Wallace, Middleton in Teesdale.
