Today, a day in the rolling countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds and a visit to the very attractive town of Malton, where in the main square we found Kemps General Store & Bookshop , which had a good selection of new books, well worth browsing.

In this age of apparent Amazon dominance it is very heartening to find good new independent bookshops in two North Yorkshire towns too small to tempt Waterstone’s, but capable of supporting a bookstore. Both the shops at Helmsley and Pickering (Pickering Book Tree ) had good stocks and were attractively laid out.

We arrived at Shandy Hall, one time home of Laurence Sterne, author of the celebrated novel ‘Tristram Shandy’ too late for the morning tour, so had to be content with wandering round the outside and looking at the second hand books housed in the ticket office. Coxwold in North Yorkshire is an attractive village and Shandy Hall is a short walk from the centre.

The former premises of Ken Spelman on Micklegate in York are now occupied by Lucius Books , which sell high quality fine and rare books. I have visited Spelman’s over some 40 years and have made many purchases there and try as I might today, the ghosts of yesterday’s shelves were ever present as I browsed the truly superb stock now on display.

Bedale in North Yorkshire is a superb small town with many historic buildings. Here you will find the excellent Miss Havisham's Book Shop, a good selection of both new and second hand books spread over several small areas with children’s books upstairs. Refreshments are available as a bonus. And for those who haven’t been visited by a vampire recently, near here is a rare surviving leech house.

‘The Bookshop’ is a superb history of bookselling from ancient times to 2026, and follows earlier books by Andrew Pettegree on the library and the perils books have faced. It sounds an optimistic note and shows how the printed book has had a remarkable ability to survive its many challengers and how physical shops still retain their allure. Highly recommended.
