After almost exclusively preferring white w**e at home over spring and summer, tonight we fancied an autumnal red... and this delicious Austrian Pinot Noir from excellent producer Familie Reinisch is absolutely hitting the spot with our mushroom pies and garlicky butter beans 😋

Our tasting theme for October will be New Wines, because I have recently bought in quite a few new things to replace some w**es I can no longer get.
Here is a sneak preview of a few of them..

Dr Loosen Red Slate Dry Riesling (Mosel, Germany)
Classic Mosel Riesling which despite being labelled dry, does have just a hint of off-dry residual sweetness to balance the zesty citrusy freshness, acidity and minerality. Delicious stuff.

Russolo Braida Antica Blanc (Friuli, Italy)
Some of you may recognise the producer name from their fantastic Pinot Grigio, this w**e is a blend of all the white varieties they grow (Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Friulano, Chardonnay, Muller Thurgau) and all of the grapes that don't make it into the single varietal w**es. Excellent value for the quality.

Famille Pacquet Macon Villages Nos Cinq Terroirs (Burgundy, France)
A classic white Burgundy, mostly unoaked (just 25% is aged in barrel) so the quality of the Maconnais fruit shines through.

Casa Balaguer Tragolargo orange Moscatel/Malvasia (Alicante, Spain)
Orange is such an autumnal colour, it's always a good time to introduce a new orange w**e. This is from a great organic and natural producer from Southern Spain.

Ciu Ciu Rosso Piceno 'Bacchus' (Marche, Italy)
Such a classic medium bodied, food friendly Central Italian red blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano from the Marche region. You may recognise the producer name (pronounced Choo choo, a reference to a previous generation that worked on the railway) because we have had their white Falerio in before but not this red.

Simonsig Twos Company Cabernet /Shiraz (Stellenbosch, South Africa)
From a familiar producer, I originally got this w**e in as a back up for our September South African tastings, but didn't end up using it, so will be introducing it in October instead.

Well this is exciting!
Thank you so much to everyone who kindly took the time to nominate us for Independent Retailer of the Year in the 2026 Lancaster BID business awards.

When you run a small independent shop, regular and return customers mean more than just another sale. We recognise them when they come back, we chat with them, get to know them, their likes and dislikes, and we can make appropriate recommendations. Sometimes we might just chat about all kinds of other things. They become more than just customers, it's a friendly relationship of trust that you can't replicate online or in a supermarket.
So, this nomination means a lot because it has come from customers 😊 🙏

This pair of RAAR w**es from Swartland have been major talking points of our September South African w**e tastings so far.

RAAR means rare, and these are small batch w**es, just a few thousand bottles of each produced.

The Skin Contact Chenin Blanc ("not an orange w**e!" insists the w**emaker) is made from bush vines planted in the 1970s. Oak aged for six months, it has a rich waxy texture and a really quite intense and complex palate. It split the room at both tasting evenings so far, but everyone found it intriguing.

The Carbonic Maceration Shiraz was almost universally liked, one taster even declared it the best red they have ever had! (we'll take that!)
The whole bunch intra-cellular fermentation helps to accentuate the fruity characteristics of the Shiraz grapes, without the heaviness or big structure that is sometimes associated with this variety. It's soft and supple, medium bodied, fruity and approachable, the quality of fruit really takes centre stage.

A really good line up last night for the first of our September South African w**e tastings.
Of the whites, the Simonsig Chenin and Hartenberg Chardonnay went down particularly well with the tasting group, while amongst the reds, the RAAR Carbonic Maceration Shiraz was a big hit... By the way, the bottle of it in the photo is an empty, it's not some kind of experimental white Shiraz 😁 I just didn't have a full one left for the photo.

I need a little break. Don't we all from time to time! But sometimes when running your own business, it can be easy to forget that.
We're going to the Lakes for a few days, so just to let you know, the shop will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday (11th and 12th August) this week...sorry for any inconvenience.

2026 vintage has started early at Centopassi! As usual, the Grillo grapes of the Pietra Lunga vineyard are the first to be harvested, destined for the 2026 vintage of the always excellent single vineyard Rocce di Pietra Longa w**e.

The most popular red at our July Tour de France themed tastings was this organic Alain Jaume Vacqueyras Grande Garrigue.
A classic Southern Rhone blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault, it is rich and full bodied but also balanced and elegant.

Vacqueyras of this quality can be a great alternative to Chateauneuf du Pape. It's Chateauneuf's immediate neighbour, same blend, very similar soils and microclimate, but less famous and usually more affordable.
