Indigo Arts & Crafts has been inspired by local teaching assistant, Bobbie Stoddon, who besides working in a classroom environment, has a substantial track record of providing fun and safe after school and holiday clubs for children in several schools across the local area since 2006. 🦇 What a bat-tastic afternoon! 🦇

We had a very special visitor yesterday afternoon when Benji ‘The Bat Man’ from the North Lancashire Bat Group joined us for an incredible interactive workshop all about one of Britain’s most misunderstood mammals.

The children were completely captivated as they discovered just how amazing bats really are. They listened brilliantly during Benji’s presentation, taking on the challenge of remembering lots of fascinating facts ready for the end of session quiz - and they absolutely smashed it! 👏

There was plenty of hands-on fun too! We made our own paper bats, strung them up for display, tested out a night vision camera, planted a selection of night-pollinator wildflowers, grasses and teasels to help local wildlife, and even followed a step by step guide to draw our own bats.

🦇 Did you know?

• The UK is home to 18 different species of bat.
• Every single one of them is protected because their populations are under pressure from habitat loss, disturbance to roosts and declining insect numbers.
• Bats are nature’s pest controllers, eating thousands of insects such as moths, midges and mosquitoes each night!
• Different species hunt in different ways – some skim over ponds and rivers, while others weave through woodland hunting insects.

Want to help bats in your own garden?
🌙 Plant evening and night-flowering plants such as evening primrose, honeysuckle, jasmine and night-scented stock, along with native wildflowers and grasses.
💧 Leave a shallow source of fresh water.
🚫 Avoid using pesticides, as bats rely on insects for food.
🏡 If you have space, consider putting up a bat box to provide a safe place to roost.

If you’d like to see bats in action, keep an eye out for local bat walks run by the North Lancashire Bat Group, RSPB Leighton Moss and other local wildlife organisations. They’re a fantastic way to experience these incredible nocturnal creatures using special bat detectors that let you hear their echolocation calls!

Yesterday we were treated to a truly magical guest workshop as we welcomed The Tiny Pony Parlour to holiday club! 🐴💚

A huge thank you to Camilla, along with her wonderful helper Maisie, for bringing the gorgeous Foxy and Deli to spend the morning with us. The children (and staff!) absolutely loved meeting them, enjoying plenty of pony cuddles, learning how to groom them, and even having a go at plaiting their beautiful manes.

As always, our guest workshops are about so much more than just having fun – they’re all about giving children enriching experiences and opportunities to learn from real experts.

Did you know?

🐴 Shetland ponies are one of the strongest pony breeds for their size and were once used to pull carts, carry peat and even work in coal mines because they were small enough to fit through the tunnels.
🐴 Their thick double coats, long manes and tails help protect them from the harsh weather of the Shetland Islands, where the breed originated thousands of years ago.
🐴 Their short, sturdy legs and compact bodies aren’t just adorable – they’re perfectly adapted for surviving rugged landscapes and powerful winds.
🐴 Stallions (male ponies) usually have more teeth than mares because they often develop canine teeth.
🐴 Grooming isn’t just about keeping ponies looking smart – brushing them can be incredibly relaxing, almost like a massage, helping them feel calm while strengthening the bond between pony and handler.

Watching the children’s confidence grow as they gently cared for Foxy and Deli was so lovely to see. There were smiles everywhere, lots of fascinating questions, and plenty of memories made.

Thank you again to Camilla, Maisie, Foxy and Deli for such a fantastic educational experience. We can’t wait to welcome you back for another visit! 💚🐴

Sometimes the best creativity comes when you don’t have long to think! ✏️🎨

Our speed drawing challenge put the children’s observation skills to the test, as they rotated around five different collections of photographs featuring some of Lancaster and the Lune Valley’s best-known landmarks.

With just five minutes at each station, they captured everything from Lancaster Castle and Ashton Memorial to St George’s Quay, Dalton Square and the beautiful Crook O’Lune and fame animals we might see there, before combining them into one unique collage of our local area.

The creativity didn’t stop there! In the afternoon, we switched gears for a crazy collage challenge where imaginations took over. Armed with a huge collection of random images, the children had the chance to create wonderfully weird, funny and inventive masterpieces completely spontaneously, the idea being their imagination would take over along the way - the whackier the better! 🤪 Sometimes, we can get so caught up in artwork needing to look a particular way, that imagination is temporarily blocked but not everything has to be structured and activities like this show that there really are no limits to creativity. ☺️

It’s always amazing to see how differently every child approaches the same challenge and we loved every minute of it! ❤️

There’s never a shortage of creativity at holiday club! 😃🎨🌿

We’ve been celebrating individuality with self-portrait artwork, encouraging the children to really look at themselves and challenging them to capture what makes them unique, with design sheets tailored to each age group.

We also headed outdoors for a nature trail, taking time to slow down, observe the world around us and discover all sorts of interesting plants, textures and wildlife.

Back indoors, our designers got to work creating their own personalised fabric pencil cases after carefully planning their ideas first. Every single one was completely different! 💡

To round off the day, we made colourful popcorn holders before settling down for a well-earned cinema afternoon, complete with fresh popcorn. 🍿🎬

From exploring and creating, to relaxing with friends, we’ve all had a wonderful time filled with imagination, laughter and making memories. 💚

What a wonderfully creative few days we’ve had! 💚✨🎨

From mixing, measuring and baking delicious, healthy homemade treats (with plenty of teamwork along the way!) to creating beautiful miniature gardens full of imagination and personalised photo frames, the children have been keeping busy from start to finish.

We love giving children the opportunity to explore different activities, learn new skills, express their creativity and, most importantly, have lots of fun with friends. It’s been lovely to see everyone so proud of what they’ve created and the confidence that shines through when they’re given the freedom to make something uniquely their own.

🧁🍓 The children have been very busy making... healthy cupcakes!!

There was a real buzz around the tables, as our young bakers rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in!

Working in mixed-age groups, the children baked their healthy fruit cupcakes completely from scratch. It was wonderful to see the older children naturally stepping into leadership roles as they helped, encouraged and guided the younger children, everyone working together as a team. The conversations, laughter and teamwork were just as important as the baking itself.

One of the biggest highlights of the day was seeing their excitement as they successfully cracked an egg! There were some very proud smiles all round. 🥚✨ Each group then chose their own fruit to add to their mixture, creating a delicious, healthier cupcake with their own personal twist before taking one home to enjoy with their families.

It's amazing how much learning can happen through something as simple as baking - measuring, mixing, making choices, building confidence, developing independence and learning to work together.

Sometimes the sweetest memories are the moments shared while making them. 💚

‘If you go down to the woods today, you’ll never believe your eyes…’ 🌿🎨

We love our woodland activities so much!

During our recent woodland visits, the children searched for inspiration for their artwork, making notes of the shapes, patterns, textures and colours they discovered in nature to influence their abstract paintings.

We gave them complete creative freedom to interpret their ideas however they wished. Some were inspired by bold pop-art styles, while others explored repeating patterns and natural textures.

Every child created something completely unique, and the finished artwork was absolutely fabulous! 💚
