Sunday past was carrick beach & rockers competition on waterfoot a cold but dry November day made for pleasant fishing

The size limit for the competition was 20cm and everyone knew that they would have to work extremely hard to catch sizeable fish this venue is well known to hold a lot of fish most of this fish ranging between the 15cm and 18cm

Keeping up with the venues reputation my first cast was a double shot of small flats and this was the theme for the day with very little blank casts

An hour and half into the competition and still nothing on the score sheet i reeled in after a few good rattles and there was an instant weight i was pleasantly surprised when i slid my trace up the beach to see a nice turbot of 27cm this venue isnt know for many turbot let alone one of this size

Spirits where lifted after finally getting on the score sheet but i just couldn't get anymore counting fish as darkness came i managed a flounder of 21cm for a score of 48 points unfortunately not enough for any prizes this time

Well done to all the winners and carrick beach & rockers for running a great competition with a great prize table

Over the weekend i fished the ifsa master angler that is a 2 day competition which the winner will be the captain of the 2023 team ireland team that will travel to italy

The venues was benone Saturday morning eaststrand/whiterocks saturday night and again benone sunday morning hopes where high leading up to the competition as the venues where fishing well but unfortunately this wasnt the case

Session 1 didnt go well for me at all with just 3 small fish to show for my efforts there was some lovey fish caught in my section with turbut in the high 30s and even a bass unfortunately none of the above by me I left the beach racking my brain wondering what i could have done differently but sometimes you just got to say the it wasn't your day and move on there was still another session to fish so i couldnt dwell to much on the poor first result

Session 2 went a lot better than session 1 with catching a small coalie within the first 10 minutes my hopes where high of a busy session that wasnt the case the fishing quickly slowed down and only odd fish was being caught i managed a treble shot shot of flounder and managed to pull another few undersize fish to keep the building the points i ended the session with 6 counters and 4 undersize that was good enough for a 3rd in my zone which i was more than happy with

Hopes of building on the previous sessions result where quickly extinguished as the first 2 hours of the session past and i still had no points on board it was a real struggle like the 1st session i finally got a fish in the last hour of the match and managed another 2 to go along with it to finish of with 2 counters and 1 undersize that was good enough for a 12th in the zone

Overall i finished in 42nd place the top half of the leaderboard not the result i was hoping for but was glad to move up after the poor first session well done to the winner Raymond M'cann who will captian team ireland in italy an excellent achievement to consistently catch in all 3 sessions against irelands top match anglers and well done to jordan muir on his 2nd place another great achievement

A short session on the rocks resulting in an afternoon of entertainment

Struggled to get through the countless po***ck and coleys i did manage to pull out a poor cod and a colourful little Cuckoo wrasse always a pleasure catching these colourful little creatures

Endless fun on the light gear i had hoped for a few more differnt species but my bait wasnt the freshest and had to make do with tiny mackeral baits

A tough day today fishing the lough foyle flounder festival on longfields this venue well known for big numbers of fish and also big flounders with £250 up for grabs it was clear what everyone had on there mind.

The fishing was slow from the start and the odd fish was caught but to everyones surprise there was talk of thorneback ray being caught and by no other than my own father a very nice surprise and a rare catch for this venue.

I was struggling most of the day with only 2 fish to show for my efforts but i kept going and a quick flurry of fish in the last hour and I managed to record 9 on the score card for a respectable 200 points with a lovely fat flounder of 34cm.

Unfortunately this wasnt enough to get on the podium but at least i caught a few fish and it was good to get back to a small bit of normality again well done to all the winners and well done to the lough foyle club for running a great event

1st lee mullan 13 fish
2nd Nicholas mcneil 11 fish
3rs Sam Stirling 10 fish

And massive well done to brian taylor on winning the £250 with a massive flounder of 36cm

Fished the first open competition of the year on waterfoot today, hosted by belfast lough angling and conservation angling club. it was a very well organised open, with a scoring system new to me, but very interesting and enjoyable!

i managed 24 fish which was good enough for 2nd in my zone and 3rd overall! well done to karl mccullough on the win and also very well done to my partner Tarra Stewart who managed 2nd in her zone thanks to Belfast Lough Angling and Conservation Club for hosting the competition
