Ahead of Carolyn Sampson's performance of 'Reason in Madness' on October 11th at the Oxford Song Festival, we're looking back at our interview from 2019 with her on the album. Following albums centring on Schubert, Verlaine and flowers, Carolyn Sampson and Joseph Middleton take their inspiration from Nietzsche for their fifth recording together on BIS Records; their programme of French and German song explores depictions of vulnerable women, including Debussy’s and Koechlin’s Bilitis, and Ophelia through the eyes of Brahms, Schumann, Strauss, Saint-Saëns, Chausson.

Lise Davidsen: Verdi, out this Friday on Decca Classics

Recorded with Edward Gardner and the London Philharmonic Orchestra London Philharmonic Orchestra, the album marks the Norwegian soprano’s first recording devoted entirely to Verdi, bringing together scenes from five of the composer’s greatest operas: Macbeth, Un ballo in maschera, La forza del destino, Don Carlo and Aida.

Rather than simply bringing together some of Verdi’s best-known arias, the album explores the emotional worlds of five remarkable women. From Elisabeth’s quiet dignity and Leonora’s search for redemption to Amelia’s vulnerability, Lady Macbeth’s psychological darkness and Aida’s inner conflict, these performances reveal Verdi’s extraordinary understanding of character and drama.

We were delighted to host Mike Batt at our Leamington Spa store in July when he held a listening party for his latest album 'Symphony No. 1 "Ukraine". In turns violent, sweet, brutal and romantic, Batt’s score will resonate with a wide audience. It is not background or minimalistic in nature.
