Florists — we need to talk…

I’ve been having so many conversations recently with florists about how much our industry is changing.

The rising cost of flowers and materials, changing customer expectations and buying habits, sustainability, social media, AI, the economy… there’s a lot going on. And I know I’m not the only one wondering what all of this means for the future of floristry.

So on Thursday 22nd October, I’m inviting florists to join me at Lyne Down in Herefordshire for something a little different.

The Future of Floristry isn’t a workshop or a conference. There won’t be presentations or anyone standing at the front claiming to have all the answers.

Instead, it’s a day for us to sit down together and have an honest, thoughtful and open conversation about our industry.

What are we experiencing in our own businesses? What has changed? What are customers asking for? What’s becoming harder? Where are the opportunities? And what might floristry look like in the years ahead?

I certainly don’t have all the answers. But put a room full of florists together and there is an enormous amount of knowledge, experience and different perspectives to draw upon.

Are we having conversations — or creating controversy?

I’ve noticed more and more posts appearing in my feed lately with headlines along the lines of “Floristry truths nobody wants to admit”, “You don’t need qualifications” or other deliberately contrary statements.

And it’s made me wonder about something.

When did having a conversation become the same thing as creating a controversy?

Of course we should question accepted ways of doing things. Floristry has changed enormously and there are plenty of old “rules” that deserve challenging. I certainly don’t believe there’s only one route into this industry, one way to run a floristry business or one definition of success.

But sometimes I wonder what the intention behind these posts actually is.

Is it to open up a useful discussion? Is it to reassure people that there are different ways of doing things? Or is the controversial statement itself becoming part of the marketing — something designed to generate comments, views and followers?

And there’s another part of this that I find interesting.

Sometimes the “unpopular opinion” being presented also happens to support whatever the person or business is selling.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. We all create content around the things we believe in, and ultimately most businesses use social media to promote what they do.

But I do think it’s worth recognising when an apparently provocative discussion is also positioning the person posting it — or their course, service or particular way of doing things — as the answer.

Because nuance doesn’t make a particularly good hook.

“You don’t need a formal qualification, but you do need to develop your knowledge, practical skills and experience” isn’t nearly as attention-grabbing as “You don’t need qualifications.”

“Your pricing needs to reflect your own costs, experience, overheads, market and business model” isn’t quite as clickable as “Stop looking at what other florists charge.”

The shorter, more controversial version gets the reaction. And perhaps that’s the bit that bothers me.

Social media rewards reaction. Agreement gets comments. Disagreement gets comments. Outrage gets even more. But does that necessarily make the conversation useful?

When complicated subjects are reduced to absolutes, we can end up dividing ourselves into camps when actually most of us probably occupy the enormous space somewhere in the middle.

And in an industry where so many people work alone, I think we should be particularly conscious of that. There’s already enough uncertainty around pricing, experience, training, sustainability, changing customer expectations and simply making a floristry business pay without making people feel they have to pick a side on everything.

I love a good floristry discussion. I think we need more of them, particularly at a time when our industry is changing so much.

But I’d rather we had conversations that made us think, rather than posts deliberately designed to make us react.

So perhaps the question isn’t always “Do you agree or disagree?”

Perhaps occasionally we should also ask:

“Why am I being asked this question — and what is it trying to make me do?”

AUTUMN BRIDAL WORKSHOP

I really looking forward to the end of summer, I think we all agree this year it’s been both lovely and challenging at the same time!
There’s something very special about autumn flowers. The deeper, richer colours, tangled trails of foliage, beautiful berries, seed heads and all those slightly wild, textural ingredients make it such a wonderful season for creating bridal bouquets.

I’m running an Autumn bridal workshop for florists who want to develop their own style, improve their technique and feel more confident in their design choices. We’ll look at how to create shape and movement, work with colour and proportion and bring everything together without losing that natural, effortless feel.

I’ll demonstrate each stage, explain the decisions I make as I’m designing and be on hand throughout the day to offer plenty of individual help and encouragement.

What’s happening to funeral floristry?
I’m hearing more and more florists saying that their funeral work has really dropped off. Of course there are lots of reasons for that, but I can’t help thinking that the rapid rise of direct cremation is having an effect. If you’ve watched daytime telly lately, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Direct cremation is being advertised constantly. It’s presented as the simpler, cheaper option replacing the traditional funeral and everything that goes with it. And with the cost of living where it is, I fully understand why families make that choice, but I also find myself asking at what cost?
This isn’t just about losing work, though it is a real worry for florists. It’s about losing one of the most meaningful parts of what we do. I’ve sat with grieving families, listening to stories about the person they’ve lost, and helping them to create a tribute that reflects a life. Those conversations were never really about flowers. They were about love, about respect, about saying goodbye. When someone dies, most of us feel a bit helpless. We want to do something as often, words just aren’t enough. Flowers step into that gap. That’s why I feel so strongly about the part flowers and florists play in the grieving process.
I absolutely believe that people should choose the farewell that’s right for them, but I do wonder whether we’re changing the way we say goodbye without really talking about what’s being lost. Are we as florists simply watching one of the most meaningful parts of our profession just quietly disappear? I’d love to hear from other florists. Are you seeing a decline in funeral work? The possibility of changes to marriage law has got me thinking.

If the law changes so that it’s the officiant who is licensed, rather than the venue, it could completely change where couples choose to get married. Gardens, woodlands, farms, beaches, riversides, … almost anywhere would be possible .

It could encourage more creativity, make weddings feel more personal, and perhaps even inspire more couples to marry because they have greater freedom over where and how they celebrate.

But I wonder about the wider impact on venues and suppliers.

If more couples choose private locations, could that affect the long-term future of established venues? And if venues struggle or close what does that mean for the florists, photographers, caterers, musicians, and so many other small businesses who rely on them?

Or -

Could greater freedom actually grow the wedding industry as a whole? Could it create exciting new opportunities for suppliers, encourage collaboration, and bring more weddings to businesses across the country?

As someone who’s worked in weddings for many years, I see both sides. Change often brings opportunity, but it can also bring challenges that aren’t immediately obvious.

Last week I was invited by the British Florist Association to join a sustainability roundtable at the Guildhall in London, held in the beautiful Alderman’s Court Room.
It was a really positive afternoon, with people from across the industry coming together to share thoughts and experiences. So lovely to meet and connect with others who care deeply about where our industry is heading.
We spoke a lot about how we can make sustainability simpler and clearer for florists – not about getting everything perfect, but about giving people better, more consistent information to support their decisions.
