Staff Pick… BKC003 - - Hardtoknownow EP ( )

The third release on the Beatnik imprint brings us some lovely, groove-laden tech house. Four slick, funk-infused, and also wonderfully playful tunes on this EP (the vocal samples are fantastic and B2 has one of the most excellent tune names ever: A Prestigious Fish Man Stole My Money).

According to the insert, Natebytheway made the Fish Man vocal samples after a 24 hour stint at Panorama Bar. I love that this has an insert with some words from the producer about his inspiration and production techniques, too. You find these a lot in old white label promos and way less so in new releases, and I think more people should do this - it’s interesting.

A2 has some lovely bass, and I apologise for my recording of it - it was the best I could achieve on my phone and I encourage yas to come in and listen to the actual record 🎧😊

In signature style, the tunes are peppered with sparse spoken vocal samples, and are led by strong percussive grooves.
