Tucked away in a lush garden; on a quiet country lane in Yorkshire, next to the rolling countryside on the outskirts of Leeds, is Julie George’s workshop. The workshop is nestled beside a small wood containing Oak and Horse Chestnut trees. The office is located on the edge of her garden surrounded by wildflowers and purple wisteria vines. Welcome to a world where wood comes to life, housing your precious objects. Made for you and your moments since 2012…

MEET THE MAKER –

A Champion of All Things Precious

Growing up on a farm, I spent my days feeding pet piglets and helping muck out our ponies as a helpful hand to Mum and Dad. However, as soon as the moment presented itself, I would go to his workshop to spy out what the next project was on his work bench. My grandfather was a draftsman, my father was both a farmer and a skilled metal worker, they were my role models. From a young age, I turned my hand to making things from old pieces of wood, which I would then sand and varnish in my father’s workshop and give as gifts to friends and family. I was inspired by my family’s creativity; this led me to study Building Studies and then Construction Management which took me to a career in Quantity Surveying in Construction and Rail. My husband Alex and I travelled for his role in the army and whilst doing so we welcomed the arrival of Callum and Lexi, our two children. Whilst my husband served in the Army, I saw the need for a secure box which would safely house my husband’s medals, cap badges and mess jewellery. I championed the craftsman inside of me and created a beautiful box for him to cherish. The Medal Box Company was born in 2012 after I decided that everybody needs a special box for safekeeping life’s precious objects and ever since then I have been back using my father’s workshop, I now have my own workshop on our little smallholding. Every box I make is made with due love, care and attention to ensure the highest quality of craftsmanship, and something that would make my father and grandfather proud! Working closely with my clients, I deliver a beautiful piece of wooden art for life, to cherish and pass down as an heirloom to the next generation, with every finite detail well thought of. That time of year again, and back in the workshop, making boxes.

I sometimes wonder if my whole life quietly led me here.

Not just to making boxes…but to understanding why people hold onto things.

I grew up around practical people.

People who made things, repaired things, worked long hours and got on with life without making a fuss about it.

Farmers.
Builders.
Tradesmen.

People who understood the value of work, but rarely talked about emotions.

And yet emotion sat quietly underneath everything.

You saw it in old photographs kept in drawers.

In medals wrapped carefully in tissue paper.

In watches only worn on special occasions.

In stories told over kitchen tables about people who had gone.
In farms, workshops and family homes passed through generations carrying memories in the walls.

I do not think I realised at the time how much that shaped me.

Later came military life.

Years of postings, moving house, raising children, balancing family life around service life, and watching how deeply military identity becomes part of a person.

Not just for those who serve…but for the whole family around them.

People outside that world often only see medals, uniforms and ceremonies.

But behind every one of those things is sacrifice.
Pressure.
Friendship.
Pride.
Loss.
Dark humour.
Resilience.
Entire lifetimes compressed into objects small enough to fit in your hand.

And somewhere amongst all of that, The Medal Box Company quietly began.

Not from investment.
Not from a slick business plan.
Not from some dream of becoming wealthy.

It started from instinct.

A feeling that these stories mattered.

That people wanted somewhere worthy to keep the things that represented entire chapters of their lives.

I still remember people doubting the idea.

“Eeeehh lass… you haven’t got a hope in hell of making boxes, it would be like pi***ng in the wind.”

And honestly, I understood why they thought it.

Because if all I had been selling was wood, hinges and glass engraving…they would probably have been right.

But what many people missed is that human beings attach emotion to objects, we always have.

A cap badge that can hold twenty odd years of identity.
A medal can represent youth, sacrifice and friendships.
An old photograph can bring someone to tears in seconds.
A handwritten letter or Bluey that can outlive the person who wrote it.

That fascinated me.

And over time I realised I was never really obsessed with making products.

I was obsessed with preserving stories.

That is why details matter to me.

The wording.
The finish.
The alignment.
The colour of the felt.
The care taken packing an order.
The conversations with customers.

The understanding that what arrives at their house is often deeply personal.

Some people buy luxury goods to impress others.

But many of the people I meet simply want something meaningful.

Something respectful.

Something worthy of the memories attached to it.

And perhaps that is why this business survived.

Because underneath all the engraving, lacquer and craftsmanship…it was always about people.

Their service.
Their families.
Their stories.
Their legacy.

Now, after more than fourteen years, I find myself caring about legacy in a much wider sense too.

Not just military memories.

But skills.
Knowledge.
Food.
Community.
Stories from older generations.

Things built slowly and properly.

The idea that not everything valuable should be disposable or rushed.

I look at the world sometimes and wonder if we are losing too much of that.

Real craftsmanship.
Real connection.
Real community.
Real stories.

Perhaps that is why I still care so deeply about what I do.

Because in a strange way, every box represents resistance against forgetting.

And maybe that is what legacy really is.

Simply leaving behind evidence that we were here…

that our lives mattered…

and that our stories are worth remembering.

On this day in May 2009, Operation TELIC formally came to a close.

Operation TELIC began on 19 March 2003, marking the UK’s involvement in the Iraq War.

Over the course of the conflict, 179 British service personnel lost their lives, with many more wounded or affected by their service.

Today, we take a moment to remember all those who served particularly those who did not return, and the families whose lives were changed forever.

We also recognise the lasting physical and mental impact that service in Iraq has had on many veterans.

As a Branch, we remain committed to supporting those who served and continuing the work of remembrance in our communities.

We will remember them.
Lest we forget.
