Wall of Sound Records

Wall of Sound Records Wall of Sound Records is the region's premier record shop stocking second hand and rare Vinyl, CDs, DVDs, Books and Memorabilia.

Wall of Sound Records is both a retail and on line shop based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It stocks all types of interesting music . The ethos is based on nearly years experience of running record shops by it's owner Elliot Smaje. I celebrate the 'thing' the object, the culture of music and the experience of it all. Downloading might provide you with music, but the 'thing', the association, the firs

t hand experience adds a dimension to what music is about and the connectivity. I'm happy to chat on here about stuff or even better, come to the shop and talk properly in person.

Regular listeners to Radcliffe and Maconie on BBC Radio 6 Music will know that it is the home of the Rock Trouser Museum.

This sparked a memory from way back in Wall Of Sound history in the days when the shop was located in the Piece Hall in Halifax. At the time there was another record shop in there run by a rather nefarious character known as Fat Alan ( these were less PC times and Alan's impression of Skeletor was less than impressive).
So there I was one day when in bursts a man through the door carrying a cardboard box and angrily bangs it on the counter proclaiming 'The bastard'. Somewhat confused I enquired what the problem was thinking it was something I had done. He opened the box to reveal a pair of elaborately decorated trousers.
He told me that Alan had sold them to him on the basis that they were Marc Bolan's stage trousers and he'd had them professionally investigated and it transpired that they were Gary Glitter's.

Open Bank Holiday Monday until 5pm.
The amount of collections I am being offered remains unabated and so new titles will continue to go into the shop daily throughout the genres and formats for a very very and indeed very long time. And that is if I don't obtain anything else.... Unlikely.

A reminder that this Saturday is Record Store Day and that Crash Records upstairs will be fully participating in it and as a consequence there will be queues outside for a good deal of the day. If you want to come to visit me you have no need to join those queues. You need only come to the door and inform the member of staff that you only wish to come downstairs and you will be allowed in.
I constantly say it - there's new titles going out every day throughout the shop. The backlog of what I am getting offered is never ending. As much as I put out it grows. Be prepared to root and look through piles and the rewards are there. You might complain that it is too full, but you'd complain more if there was nothing interesting on offer. From Bollywood to Metal, Abba to Avant Garde, Country to Classical, Punk to Funk - all bases covered.

Noel Gallagher's hair has been in the shop today, but it wasn't him that was wearing it.

From a Scott Walker tour programme I have just acquired. Pretty impressive lineup for a night out.

Whilst it has been some time since there has been a sighting of the legend that is the man who never buys anything, there is of course the regular appearence of his cultural equivelence, Hans Zinpockets, the various people (usually men) who stand staring at racks and racks of records with digits never leaving the confines of the locality of their nether regions in the belief that the record that they might want will somehow mystically rise from said racks by the power presumably generated by the rubbing of the contents of the pockets ( or something close by ) and reveal itself. Amazingly this never happens, and like the man who never buys anything, no purphase is made through similar lack of enthusiasm. Clearly the joy of the experience was confined entirely to the hands and not the soul.

I began on market stalls selling records and books when I had just turned 21. Yesterday I turned 61. That means that apart from the 18 months between the shops in Huddersfield and Harrogate I have been selling records for 40 years and ostensibly all my working life. What a joy to work with the things you love. The objects of art that best project the the sounds of stimulation that provide the soundtrack to life.
There have been ups and downs over the years. Struggles and good times. People have come and gone. I have learnt a vast amount. I have tried to pass it on. But I also always still try to learn. One of the joys is that for all I might know about a wide variety of music, people come into the shop who know a damn sight more about specific things than I do and I love to learn from them. I will never not be be humble in the presence of knowledge. And if I can learn, I can pass it on. When I started, I knew nothing except a little about the music I already liked. I still have a lot to learn. I always will.
Maybe someday someone younger will join me on this journey and Wall of Sound will continue after I fade into the background. I like the idea of that.

For anyone coming to the shop and who hasn't been before, there's a slight lack of the usual visibility as there's a huge promotional sign in Crash's window for the new Cribs album that is obscuring the presence of my signs, so if you aren't sure if you are in the right place, you are and I am downstairs. Just come inside and descend into record paradise/ hell.

Thanks to everyone for your support in 2025, particularly your messages of support recently over my illness. I'm gradually easing my way back in and seeing how it feels.. and so far after a couple days of taking it easy and seeing lots of familiar faces, it has been a joy to be back. I'll be here until about 3 today should anyone be around to say hello.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year and a splendiferous 2026.

See you next year with plenty of new toys on offer constantly!!

Elliot
