If you've ever run a market or event, you'll know most conversations are friendly and easy. Then comes that one exchange where you need to uphold a rule, and suddenly someone labels you difficult. Safety doesn't happen by accident; it comes from clear, consistent boundaries. Without them, things feel unpredictable, and that unpredictability breeds unease. If enforcing standards creates safer events, why do some people react so strongly? Psychologists have some explanations. One is psychological reactance, where we push back when our freedom feels restricted. Another is cognitive dissonance. We see ourselves as reasonable, so when corrected, it's tempting to decide the organiser is the problem rather than our own misstep. None of that necessarily means the organiser has been heavy-handed. It often means that they've upheld a standard that someone else found uncomfortable. And that's where the unseen work comes in. One of the greatest compliments an organiser can receive is when people think they've had nothing to do. From the outside, it can look like they've disappeared, maybe even like they're taking a break. But the reality is usually site walks, weight checks on gazebos, eyes on the weather, quiet chats with venue staff, ensuring emergency routes stay clear, resolving complaints before anyone else even knows there was one. The conversation a trader remembers for five minutes is often the result of five hours of preparation the organiser already put in. When prevention works, nothing dramatic happens. That's the point. As a trader, I've done events where nothing was challenged and honestly, didn't feel relaxed. By contrast, when expectations are clear and applied fairly, I can breathe. Because consistency creates trust, and trust creates safety. Great organisers aren't those who never upset anyone. They're the ones who handle the occasional bump with fairness and calm, because they understand that the uncomfortable moment with one person is often what protects a great day for everyone else.
