The stained glass at Coventry Cathedral never fails to stop me in my tracks.

No matter the weather outside, the colour inside this space is extraordinary. Even on the greyest day the glass still glows, filling the cathedral with deep blues, greens, golds and reds that shift as you move around the space.

I love it so much that it had to feature on the new Coventry Colour Palette. The city has a really distinctive mix of colours but these windows capture something deeper about Coventry.

The glass you’re looking at is the Baptistery Window, designed by artist John Piper and made by master glassmaker Patrick Reyntiens for the new Coventry Cathedral after the Second World War. Rising more than 26 metres high, it’s made from 195 individual panels of stained glass. The colours move from darker to lighter tones to reflect the cathedral’s message of reconciliation and renewal.

It’s one of those places where colour isn’t just decoration. It tells the story of the city.
