🇪🇹 Discovery No. 4: Ethiopia Haru

Throughout August, our Discovery subscribers have been enjoying Haru, a beautifully expressive washed coffee from the Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia.

With an impressive SCA cup score of 87.5, Haru perfectly showcases why Ethiopia continues to set the standard for some of the world’s most distinctive coffees. Expect delicate floral aromatics alongside vibrant notes of strawberry and raspberry in the cup.

One of the things we love most about Discovery is following the harvest calendar, bringing you coffees as they arrive from origin. Haru is a fresh-crop Ethiopian coffee from this year’s harvest, landing in the UK only recently and allowing us to share it while it’s tasting at its very best.

Behind this coffee is Komilachu Tadesse, who works alongside hundreds of smallholder farmers around Yirgacheffe. Farmers deliver carefully picked ripe cherries to the Haru washing station, where meticulous washed processing produces the clarity, elegance and vibrant fruit character that Ethiopian coffees are celebrated for.

Discovery has always been about more than simply receiving a new coffee each month. It’s an opportunity to explore different origins, producers, processing methods and flavour profiles, while learning more about the people behind every cup.

If you’ve been brewing Haru throughout August, we’d love to know what you’ve made of it. As always, thank you for joining us on the journey.

From dedicated team baristas in camp to Oatly’s Losers Cafe in Mexico City, coffee has found its way into this year’s tournament in more ways than one.

It’s also represented on the pitch, with 14 coffee-producing nations competing: Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Ivory Coast, Ghana, DR Congo, Ecuador, Panama, Haiti, Saudi Arabia, United States, South Africa, Cape Verde and Australia.

Some, like Brazil and Colombia, are global coffee powerhouses. Others such as Cape Verde and Australia produce just a few thousand sacks a year. Together, they represent the incredible diversity of coffee on one of sport’s biggest stages.

England’s route through the competition has been remarkably intertwined with those coffee-growing nations. Having already faced Ghana and DR Congo, Mexico await in the Round of 16, with a potential quarter-final against Brazil if both sides progress.

It’s perhaps the widest representation coffee has ever had at a World Cup, and another reminder of just how global coffee really is.

We wanted to talk a little more about one of the key people behind June’s Discovery coffee: Josué Morales.

While Entre Rios begins with a cooperative of 52 producers in Antigua, the coffee is exported by Los Volcanes Coffee, a company founded and led by Josué.

What fascinated us about Josué’s story is the depth of his involvement in coffee. He started out as a coffee roaster and trader in Guatemala more than 20 years ago before moving into green coffee exports. Since then, his work has spanned everything from community development and organic agriculture to microbial studies, soil health and coffee genetics.

Today, much of his time is spent leading research projects and helping producers better understand how decisions made on the farm ultimately influence what’s in the cup.

That curiosity and commitment to learning runs through everything Los Volcanes does. Their approach combines rigorous quality control, long-term sustainability and a genuine passion for Guatemalan coffee.

It’s exactly the kind of relationship-driven, origin-focused approach we love to see, and one of the reasons Entre Rios stood out to us as this month’s Discovery coffee.

Throughout June we’ve been sharing the story of our Discovery subscription coffee from the Entre Rios Cooperative. The cooperative is based in Antigua, one of Guatemala’s most beautiful coffee-growing regions, and the city acts as a gateway to many of the farms that make up the co-op.

As it happened, our friend Jaina was spending a week in Antigua earlier this month as part of her travels through Central America. Whilst we’ve been talking about the coffee in the cup and the people who grew it it, she explored the city behind it.

From its thriving coffee scene and colourful streets to the volcanoes that define the landscape, here’s her guide to spending a week in the home of our June Discovery Subscription coffee, Entre Rios.

Over to Jaina…

Introducing our Discovery coffee for a June - Entre Rios, Guatemala 🇬🇹

For June’s Discovery subscription, we’re heading to Guatemala, specifically to the Entre Rios Cooperative in Antigua. It’s a coffee that immediately stood out on the cupping table for its comforting sweetness and approachability, with notes of dulcey chocolate, caramel and nougat. But as often happens with great coffees, the flavour is only part of the story.

Behind this lot sits a remarkable cooperative of 52 producers and one of the most fascinating coffee minds we’ve encountered in recent years: Josué Morales of Los Volcanes Coffee. Together, they represent a side of speciality coffee that is often overlooked — one built not around trends or hype, but around patience, research, sustainability and an obsession with understanding coffee at its deepest level.

We are looking forward to sharing more about this coffee, the city of Antigua where the cooperative is based, and finally - Josue himself, a fascinating character with an unwavering passion for coffee his home country of Guatemala.

Day two in Brazil began with a visit to Fazenda Palmiltal

After around a two-hour drive, we pulled into another beautiful courtyard and met the owner, Carlos. He told us he was born in the same bed he still sleeps in today. Having lived here his entire life, coffee farming is woven into almost every part of his story.

Carlos is also president of Cooxupé, a coffee farming cooperative with 21,000 members, and previously served as mayor of the region. He’s been a significant figure in the area for many years. His son, Augusto, is his right-hand man and helps run the farm alongside him.

After a quick coffee, we jumped into pickup trucks and headed deep into the farm via rugged dirt tracks. Palmital is one of four farms owned by Carlos, totalling around 1,000 hectares of land, with roughly 400 hectares planted with coffee. The scale is difficult to comprehend until you’re standing in the middle of it.

We met some of the workers preparing to harvest and had the chance to chat with them. One gentleman has worked on the farm for 46 years and you could immediately see the bond between him and Carlos. At one point Carlos became emotional talking about their connection and the loyalty they’ve shown one another over the decades.

We also had the opportunity to try harvesting ourselves. Because the farm stretches across several mountains, everything is picked by hand as the terrain is simply too steep for machinery. It quickly gives you an appreciation for just how hard the work is.

After visiting the patios and mill, we sat down for another incredible meal of roasted pork while chatting with Carlos.

Before leaving, Carlos wanted to know where each of us was from and what our businesses were called. Despite everything he’s achieved, he still has such a genuine interest in his coffee and where it ends up in the world.

We presented him with a card signed by everyone in the group and he started to tear up. It was genuinely moving to see how invested he still is after all these years.

For someone farming at such a vast scale, what stood out most wasn’t the size of the operation. It was the people.
