A Hornby replacement magnet can be the right size and still be the wrong spec.

For restoration work, fit is only part of the problem. The magnet also needs enough pull for reliable operation, the right hole position, and a grade that holds performance under heat.

Most magnetic sensor problems are caused before the sensor is even wired, because the sensor only reads the magnetic field that actually reaches its face in the installed position.

That is the hidden link between compasses, Hall effect sensors, speed detection, position sensing, current sensing, magnetic encoders and vibration monitoring.

The applications may look different but actually, the failure pattern is often the same: the magnet is too far away, facing the wrong direction, weakened by temperature, or sitting near steel that pulls the field away from the sensing point.

Then the sensor gets blamed.

In practice, magnet grade, size, pole orientation, air gap and working temperature should be treated as part of the sensor specification.

A strong sensor paired with the wrong magnet can still give weak, late or inconsistent readings.
