Celebrating the past, present, and future of Leigh ✍️

Last week, the new and improved Civic Square opened following a major refurbishment of the Leigh town centre space, complete with new paving, seating, landscaping, lighting, and public realm features to make the square safer, more welcoming, and flexible for community events

Local community groups also had a hand in designing the square, with he Leigh, Atherton, and Tyldesley Heritage Group helping to design a heritage timeline featuring key events from the square's past, while Leigh Young Writers wrote a poem that is now engraved into the square and the Pete Shelley Memorial Group planted a cherry tree as part of the memorial garden

The Leigh Young Writers group said: "Leigh Young Writers wrote this poem, they each wrote a poem related to the past, present, and future of Leigh, and then we took lines from each of the children and put it together into something that flowed coherently."

Following a soft launch to mark the square's completion last Thursday, an official launch with family friendly activities took place on the Saturday to welcome the public back to the town centre space ✅

Make a Difference Awards live from Leigh 📻🌟

As you may have heard, this year's BBC Radio Manchester Make a Difference Awards will be hosted at Leigh Sports Village on Thursday 24 September, celebrating the community heroes and beloved organisations that go above and beyond across Greater Manchester

To mark the announcement, BBC Radio Manchester hosted a live show from LSV on Tuesday afternoon, which allowed the opportunity to shout out about all the amazing things about the town, from the Leopards and the Harriers, to Pennington Flash, regeneration plans, grassroots sports, local businesses, and the tight-knit community

New-look Civic Square re-opens in Leigh - with launch event taking place tomorrow 🤩

Following a major refurbishment at Leigh's Civic Square, a soft launch event was held to mark the completion of the project on September 10, inviting stakeholders such as the Mayor of Wigan Borough, councillors, council staff, and contractors, as well as residents and community groups who had a hand in designing the square

The square has been redesigned with high-quality paving, seating, landscaping, lighting, and public realm features helping the space to serve as an attractive space for people to meet, relax, and enjoy a range of community events

Some of the groups who attended the launch included the Leigh, Atherton, and Tyldesley Heritage Group who helped to design a heritage timeline featuring key events from the square's past, Leigh Young Writers who helped to create a poem that is engraved into the square, and the Pete Shelley Memorial Group who have planted a cherry tree as part of the memorial garden

From 11am to 3pm on Saturday, 12 September, two outdoor performances will take place at the town centre square, including a vibrant contemporary circus theatre show and a live production from musicians, dancers, and cooks from around the world. There will also be several craft activities including a Jelly printing session delivered by The Turnpike Centre, and a LEGO building project delivered by Wigan and Leigh Archive Service ☺️

The new and improved Civic Square is set to be officially unveiled following a major programme of improvements in Leigh ✨

A central part of Leigh’s Regeneration Project, the new-look square has been designed to create a welcoming and vibrant destination in the heart of the town centre, complete with high-quality paving, new seating, improved landscaping, enhanced lighting, and attractive public realm features.

Building on a programme of successful events hosted in recent years, the works will ensure that the square continues to serve as an attractive space for people to meet, relax, and enjoy a range of community events.

Councillor Dane Anderton, portfolio holder for economic development and regeneration, said: “We are delighted to unveil the new and improved Civic Square and provide residents with a revamped, welcoming space that reflects the pride that we have in Leigh.

“We have had the help of community groups when it came to redesigning the Square, and I am really pleased to see how the revamp looks and how it will be able to accommodate a variety of events in the future.” 🤝

Following the project to revamp shop fronts and breathe new life into Leigh town centre, we are hosting a feedback session on the regeneration scheme next week

This is an important step to evaluate the progress of the building grant scheme, so please come along to share your views and help shape future investment in the town centre

Your feedback will help us ensure the scheme continues to support local businesses and create a more attractive, welcoming Leigh for residents, visitors and traders.

Pennington Flash forms part of The Flashes of Wigan and Leigh, the first National Nature Reserve in Greater Manchester and you are invited to spend a fun-filled day at its annual Flashes Festival of Nature for a day of nature-themed activities.

Wigan Council has submitted a planning application for a major refurbishment of Leigh Market, including proposals for a new roof, entrance, and lobby area. ✅

A new, modern entrance aims to raise the profile of the market and maximise footfall, with the entrance's pleated features and palette paying homage to Leigh’s market town heritage, traditional pitched stalls, and surrounding architecture.

A replacement roof is a key feature of the plans to ensure a better protected environment for traders and shoppers, while clear, contemporary signage and an illuminated façade has also been proposed to highlight the building’s year-round usage

As the planning application moves forward, preparatory works are also set to take place at several units within Spinning Gate Shopping Centre. Following discussions with traders, the market will be temporarily located to these units next year whilst the refurbishment of the main market hall is underway.

As the planning application is being determined, the market remains open and trading inside the Market Hall – so please continue to support Leigh’s independent traders at our fabulous market. 🥰
