Some Seismographs refuse to die! These photo's taken in March 2023, show UK geophysicist Ben Dyer operating a Geometrics ES1210F seismograph underground in a mine in Africa. The ES1210F was brought to the market by Geometrics in late 1980, that is 43 years ago! and whilst some problems, including noisy channels were reported by Ben, the data proved good enough to warrant a more comprehensive follow-up survey using a modern seismograph. It is equally remarkable that in today's world of rapidly changing data format's and communications protocols that following a piece of code being written data was able to be transferred to a modern lap top for processing and interpretation.

Were really exited to be receiving a Loupe mobile TEM system from Australia next week. This innovative system allows for TEM soundings whilst walking along, with no need to stop to take a measurement and will be available for demonstration survey and rentals.

26/03/2020

In line with government guidance we continue to support customers by supplying geophysical equipment rental & repair services.

The courier services we use are operating within normal capacity.

We are open for business with essential staff only and can ship and receive equipment within our normal capacity. We will facilitate collections and accept hand deliveries, but social distancing measures will be adhered to.

Engineers are available for technical support calls and sales staff are all working from home with full access to our systems.

In addition to the measures we implemented last week, we have also introduced the following;
(Implemented as of the 24th of March)

- We are asking customers to unload their vehicles and leave the equipment on the threshold of the loading bay and stand back to allow Geomatrix staff to handle the equipment.
- We will wipe down all transit cases/Instrument handles & caches with alcohol wipes before it is permitted to enter the premises
- All instrumentation will be handled with gloves
We are taking precautions to reduce the risk of virus transfer from instrument keypads and screens
- We have sufficient equipment within the rental pool to accommodate these additional measures without causing a delay to our services.

If you have any questions, please get in touch by calling the office on +44 (0)1525 383438 or email us at [email protected]

Trainee Geophysicist

Geomatrix Earth Science Ltd is a small but long established UK company specialising in the supply of exploration geophysical instrumentation and software to the minerals, engineering site investigation, groundwater and archaeological geophysical markets. We are actively engaged with all geophysics disciplines and trade on a global basis. Full details of our company activities can be found at www.geomatrix.co.uk.

We are looking to employ a person with strong A-level results in Physics and Maths to fill the role of Trainee Geophysicist. The successful candidate will learn on the job and will be funded to undertake a remote learning Open University degree program in Physics (or similar course). The position offers an individual with a means of supporting themselves financially through a degree; and provides extensive industry experience to ensure future career opportunities and development, or enable the individual to complete a Master’s degree.

The position is extremely varied and the candidate’s duties will evolve with their experience. Initially the individual will be involved in testing equipment, undertaking small research projects, booking hire equipment for customers, and producing marketing material for the website and exhibitions. Later duties will include customer support, demonstrating equipment and presenting at conferences.

This is a unique opportunity for someone who would like to be involved in a growing dynamic industry with strong carers opportunities.

The closing date for applications is August 31st. Please send your CV and a short introduction to yourself outlining why you believe you would be a good candidate for this position to Matthew Guy, Senior Geophysicist by email to: [email protected]

We welcome applicants and their parents to visit our offices to learn more about the position and funding for the Open University degree.

Very pleased to have delivered a state-of-the-art GeoEel digital seismic streamer system to Camel Laird shipyard for installation on the new 128m NERC / British Antarctic Survey research vessel, the Sir David Attenborough. https://www.bas.ac.uk/polar-operations/sites-and-facilities/facility/rrs-sir-david-attenborough/ The GeoEel will be commissioned in sea trials later this year.

Construction is progressing on the RRS Sir David Attenborough – one of the most advanced polar research vessels in the world. From 2019 onwards scientists researching oceans, ice and atmosphere will have access to state-of-the-art facilities on this floating multidisciplinary research platform.

Equipment Highlights from SAGEEP

Geonics announced the release of a new range of metal detectors designed for UXO detection in channelling environments. The new Flex range of time domain EM sensors is tailored towards improving productivity through the deployment of multi receiver coil arrays. The Flex systems are targeted toward different survey scales;

The EM61-BLU26 consists of 4 0.5x0.5m receiver coils, in a linear array, and a flexible 2.25x0.45m transmitter coil. The system is modular and can be configured with 2 receiver coils and a 1.13x0.45m transmitter coil in constrained environments. The adoption of smaller receiver coils increases spatial resolution enhancing the detection of small shallow objects; whilst maintaining a large transmitter coil area ensures sufficient magnetic moment potential for resolving deeper objects.

The EM61-LX2 is a two channel variant supplied with the two 1mx0.5m receiver coils. Both systems measure and record the decaying magnetic field on each receiver coil at two time gates. A third calculated value is also recorded for each channel, which has been subjected to a proprietary algorithm which removes the influence of magnetic soils and rock materials

The EM63-Flex is specifically designed for efficient large open area surveying. The system consists of four 1mx0.5m receiver coils and one transmitter coil which encircles the receiver coils. Deploying an array like this is nothing new; customers have been deploying 3 time synchronised EM61MK2 for large area surveys form many years. However the EM63-Flex offers 26 time gates per channel and is capable of recording 15 full records per second offering much greater fidelity than was previously achievable.

Geometrics release a new Seismograph - the ATOM

The ATOM introduces a new style of seismograph to the Geometrics Inc range. As a stand-a-lone seismograph each Acquisition Unit (AU) is a complete recording system providing total flexibility over the number of data acquisition channels. Containing an internal battery, high accuracy GPS clock and 4 GB memory the ATOM can be deployed for up to 70 hours of continual data acquisition before recharge. For longer monitoring projects the addition of a small 5V solar panel permits data acquisition to be extended to up to 23 days with the 4GB standard internal memory; or 186 days with the optional 32GB extended memory.

No compromises have been made in terms of the performance of the system; offering up to 0.25ms sample rate the bandwidth of the system is 1.5kHz to 1650kHz with 128dB 24bit dynamic range.

Operating the instrument couldn’t be easier. Users turn the boxes on by shaking them. The box will automatically begin recording as soon as it achieves GPS lock. LEDs inform the operator of the battery status, network state, GPS time lock and geophone connection. Data is retrievable via WiFi and a laptop.

When combined with the semi-automatous SeisImager Passive Wave processing software the system is ideally suited for obtaining shear wave velocity measurements to depth up to 1km.

Compatible with any standard geophone the ATOM offers flexibility where many other similar systems don’t. A version of the ATOM with 3 measurement channels will soon hit the market; changing the face of how shallow 3 component data acquisition for geological engineering is conducted.

For further information about the ATOM seismograph please feel free to contact us through our enquiry form. Alternatively sign-up to our newsletter and we will keep you informed about all the latest instrument developments.
