A little honesty from behind the counter at Tight Lines Tackle...
Running a small independent business certainly has its ups and downs, and lately there have been rather more downs than ups!
September was a great month for us, but October has been a completely different story. Some days have been painfully quiet, and with winter approaching, I'm not going to pretend that isn't worrying.
Seeing other independent shops in Leighton Buzzard struggling, and some sadly closing their doors, really brings home just how difficult things are becoming.
But I still believe in what I'm trying to build here.
When I opened Tight Lines Tackle, I knew I couldn't compete with the enormous ranges offered by the big tackle shops. I can't stock every brand, every rod or every bit of tackle that everyone wants.
But I can offer somewhere local, friendly and affordable to get the essentials you need to go fishing.
Fresh maggots, worms, casters, deadbaits, groundbaits, pellets, terminal tackle and plenty more. Somewhere you can pop in, have a browse, ask a question or simply have a chat about fishing.
And that's also why I've been developing TLT Core and Wyldfox.
I've never believed that good fishing bait needs to come with an expensive price tag. My ambition is to produce everyday baits that are every bit as good as the big brands, perhaps even better in some cases, but at prices that make fishing a little easier on the wallet.
I'm also keen to explore more reusable packaging and ways of reducing waste and unnecessary expense. Every penny saved matters, especially these days.
Good bait. Good tackle. Sensible prices. That's what Tight Lines is about.
I'm not asking anyone to spend money they haven't got. I know times are difficult for everyone, and fishing is often one of the first things people cut back on when money gets tight.
But I do want to be honest about something.
I can't grow this business without my customers.
Every visit, every purchase, every recommendation to a friend helps me keep building something I genuinely believe Leighton Buzzard deserves.
I have so many ideas for the future of Tight Lines, but growing a small business takes time, investment and, above all, customers coming through the door.
I don't expect to please every angler or stock every product. But if you're heading out fishing and need some bait, a few essentials or just a bit of friendly advice, I'm here and always happy to help.
To everyone who's supported Tight Lines so far, whether you've spent £2 or £200, thank you. It genuinely means a great deal.
I'd love to keep building this little shop into something our local fishing community can be proud of.
Tight lines!
Simon
