On December 4th, Oil & Dust turns one. To celebrate, we’re launching our first free to enter, open art prize, and we’d love you to enter!

Send us a photo of one original piece by Monday 16 November. Please see our website for more information on how to enter. Our judges will choose a shortlist to hang in The Studio through December, and we’ll announce the winners at our birthday private view on Friday 4 December. You’re all invited.

Free to enter, for artists aged 16+ who live, work or study in Sussex (or Brighton & Hove).

Painting, drawing, pastel, printmaking and mixed media, up to 60 × 60cm framed.

Prizes from Michael Harding, da Vinci, Schmincke, Faber-Castell, R&F, Sennelier and more plus Oil & Dust vouchers and the chance to have a solo exhibition of your own!

A little bit late but wanted to give a huge thank you to everyone who took part during Artwave. It was soo lovely to see the walls adorned with artwork. Hosting demonstrations, chatting, and sharing. Looking forward to the next one!

Painter and illuminator Eric Verkade Eric Verkade will be showing during art wave at the Studio. He uses tempera, gold leaf, ink, and a wide assortment of nibs! His work is so intricate and helps to keep traditions of tempera painting, gilding and calligraphy alive through the subject of Sussex folklore and landscape.

Photographer Harry Brayne Harry Brayne will have prints available during Art Wave. I absolutely love this print. For the backdrop Harry used pastel cards, and the colours and textures are perfect.

Artist Andrew Rogers Andy Rogers will be exhibiting at the Studio during Art Wave. His gestural work uses gesso and pigment and it really celebrates the materials used. I first met Andy when he walked in and asked if we had pigment. At the time we didn’t! However we discussed Unison pastels. These pastels are so pure, with just a touch of natural clay binder. Andy’s work really highlights how intensely pigmented they are.

Polly will be guiding you through the process of natural pigment making and you will learn about the historical origins of pigments, and leave with your own hand-painted colour wheel made entirely from your studio-made pigments and handcrafted watercolour paint 💕 dreamy!
