Delighted to welcome a few of the patrons of the Leeds Art Fund yesterday. Along the way we discussed Guy Taplin, whose work I have been collecting for 40 years. It was the first time I had put all the birds together and I realised it is now quite a flock! Next up was the history of the house which included the ongoing mystery of the carved stone tablet which includes the coat of arms of the De Roos/Ros and the Fitzhughs- probably 14th/15th century and most likely looted from nearby Jervaulx Abbey. Finishing up with strawberries, shortbread and something with a few bubbles - a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Having recently been down the rabbit hole that consists of boxes and boxes of photographs, I then went through our mother’s suitcase filled with a lifetime of memories. First up was my beloved Lemondrop soft toy - still going strong after hundreds of washes and now 64 years old. Like many children - there would be a meltdown if he wasn’t present as he went everywhere with me. Next I found my christening dress wrapped in tissue paper and modelled in the photograph by yours truly alongside our father, grandpa and my godmothers. Coming back from trips abroad when my father was away working as a fashion designer, outfits and dresses would accompany him home. These included this sweet dress embroidered with ducks. But I remember one of my favourites was this zip up jump suit - pictured with another favourite toy of mine - Edward Bear. Not very original in the naming department but he - the bear not our father - growled when you bent him over and had a secret zip up compartment in his back. This held my stash in the early days of other small toys, then sweets and progressing in later years - I’m ashamed to say - ci******es. Maybe my love of driving - (particularly manual cars) - was influenced by what looks like the Maserati logo on the breast pocket of this garment. Either that or it’s King Canute with maybe a tie to my Pisces birth sign? The final image is particularly apt given our current weather - me rocking the Norah Batty headscarf look - Hermès eat your heart out ……

Some of my friends, followers and colleagues may remember a post I made regarding the burial plot that I bought at our beautiful 15th century church at Thornton Steward. Well, August is my month to do the flowers and look after the church - hardly an onerous task - although I must admit it was a bit of a challenge to find any flora in my parched garden with which to decorate the altar and nave. Much use was made of greenery in the form of asparagus fern, conifers and a few surviving iceberg roses. As a fan of early churches I always leave an offering on my visits - sadly the offering I found when I arrived at St Oswalds was not one I had hoped to find! Our visitors book is filled with complimentary messages. My message to the depositor of said dog deposit - I’m hoping it was a moment of forgetfulness on your part - if not - don’t worry - I removed it - but hopefully on your return - if you do return to our beautiful church - you will leave an offering of the correct kind for the upkeep of the building - if not - I am being buried here - hopefully not too soon - and I will return to haunt you !!!

Different night - different garden. One my mother designed for me at my first grown up house that I owned in Harrogate 35 years ago. My father now lives here and it was lovely to sit outside on one of the hottest nights I have known in England - thinking of the planning that went into what started as a bare, flat patch of rubble. Happy memories

My mother used to say that it was amazing how far you could travel in a day - so Monday morning - up with the larks and I was rewarded with this view 5 minutes from home of the harvest, safely gathered in. The Brucie Bonus was a quiet motorway. En route - the obligatory breakfast bap using my Gregg’s app. The day just kept getting better when I realised I’d earned a free sausage and omelette delight 🤩. I had great plans to visit an exhibition and a couple of early churches in between meetings - sadly that went out of the window - but I was accompanied by a wonderful sunset driving home. But where did I go ?

Finally made it to the Schiaparelli Exhibition at the V and A and one of the dresses by the current designer, Daniel Roseberry, stopped me in my tracks - well, rather in my meandering, through this wonderful extravaganza. In an earlier post I mentioned that my father was a fashion designer (women’s) before joining my mother in Elaine Phillips Antiques. In 1958 he designed my mother’s wedding dress seen in the first image of their wedding day at the Queen’s Hotel in Leeds. Fast forward to 2026 - hey presto! The hunt for this black and white photograph which I knew from many previous viewings, took me down the rabbit hole that is our family hoard of photographs from four generations. My father, practically on his own, at the Trevi Fountain before influencers and the now imposed charge! The cup he won at Leeds College aged 18 for fashion design. His design book from that time. Him as a well turned out toddler. With his father who was also in the rag trade as a pattern cutter in Leeds. My grandpa looking very dapper with his best friend. With my grandma circa the 1920’s/30’s. And so back to the exhibition - I was struck by how many designs have been reproduced over the years in similar forms and are eminently wearable. The boots - so reminiscent of designs the 20th/21st century. The creations of today’s Schiaparelli - works of art - but the one I coveted and stupidly didn’t photograph was a navy blue opera coat with a simple sequin collar - perfection.

Visiting BADA member, SPENCER SWAFFER this week to celebrate the end of US tariffs on art and antiques. If you are wondering why we are grinning like maniacs, it’s because we were discussing whether we should launch a competition to write a caption for this photograph and the object contained therein. Common sense and a sense of decency prevailed !! Sadly …….
