Twist, loop, saxony. The words on a carpet label mean very little until someone explains them 🧶

A twist has the yarn twisted tight so the pile stands upright. It hides footprints and vacuum lines, which is why it ends up in most busy houses.

A loop pile keeps the yarn looped rather than cut. It holds its shape brilliantly in doorways, though we would think twice if you have got a cat with a habit of scratching.

Saxony is the deep, soft, longer pile. Lovely in a bedroom. Put it down a hallway and you will be looking at footprints by teatime.

Three flights, every turn different 👌

Axminster Simply Naturals, fitted by our Lichfield team through the stairs, half landings and hallway.

Old stairs like these are never square, so each tread gets measured on its own and cut tight against the dark timber. Look at the turns, no bunching where the flights change direction.

A natural weave like this stands up to constant traffic and keeps its texture instead of flattening off.

Someone has claimed the top step 🐾

Striped herringbone flatweave runner, in at Lichfield.

Stripes are unforgiving on stairs. They have to stay parallel with the treads the whole way up, so the runner gets set out from the bottom step and checked as it goes, and there is equal white paint showing either side.

A tight flatweave takes the traffic of a staircase, and dog claws do not pull it the way they pull a looser pile.

The fit goes smoother when a bit of prep is done first, so here is what we would ask you to sort before the van pulls up 🚚

Rooms cleared and wardrobes emptied. A heads up on whether you want the old flooring taken away.

Any doors that already catch, because a thicker underlay can mean they need easing off.
Somewhere near the front to park, and a shut door for the dog 🐕

And get the decorating done before the flooring goes down, never the other way round.

Dark units, rich floor, that combination never misses 👌

Wide plank herringbone in a rustic oak, in at Lichfield.

Set out from a centre line so the points run true across the open floor, then cut in tight to the kick boards along the run of units and round the peninsula. Those cuts sit at eye level when you walk in, so there is nowhere to hide a bad one.

Herringbone in a kitchen gives you the pattern without the worry, because it wipes clean and handles spills off the hob.

Some staircase to be working on 👌

Brintons Bell Twist, fitted by our Lichfield team on the stairs, half landings and galleried landing.

A staircase like this is really three flights and two turns, so every riser gets measured and cut on its own. Look at the way it runs round the newel posts and past every spindle, tight to the timber with no bunching, then picks up clean on the flight above.

Wool twist takes the traffic on a main staircase and keeps its shape on the nosings, which is where a lesser carpet goes flat first.

Whole upstairs done in one go 👌
Andes Berber in Light Beige on the stairs and landing, Belagio 65 in the bedrooms, all fitted by our Lichfield team.

The herringbone weave has to line up as it turns onto the winders and again where it meets the landing, or you see the pattern break from the top of the stairs. Look at the doorway joins too. Berber into the soft twist, clean line, no lip where the two meet.

Berber takes the hammering on the stairs, and you get the softer pile where you actually want it.

That green binding against the timber 👌

Herringbone flatweave runner with a wide bound border, one of the looks we have got in at Lichfield.

The border is the tricky bit. It has to hold a straight line down the treads and then take the turn without the tape puckering, and there is equal timber showing either side the whole way down. That gets measured before anything gets cut.

A tight flatweave like this takes the traffic of a staircase, and the bound edge stops it fraying at the sides.
