Next in our Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize spotlight we have May We Feed the King by Rebecca Perry. 👑

“A dark and unpredictable tale of a curator bringing a scene of history to life in a historic building, whilst trying to leave her own past buried. May We Feed The King gives a glimpse into a profession I’d never given much thought to, and cleverly incorporates scenes from the past to see how right (or wrong) the recreation is!”

The Infamous Gilberts by Angela Tomaski is next up on our Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize spotlight!Bookseller Adam says:

“I’ve never read anything quite like The Infamous Gilberts before! It’s a story told partially in second person, as you’re given a guided tour of the former stately home of the Gilbert family. Every nook and cranny gives a glimpse into the lives of the 5 children. and gradually reveals how they gained their ‘infamous’ moniker. Books like this are the reason I like giving debut novels a read!”

Our next Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize Shortlist spotlight is for Lost Lambs by Madeline Cash! 🐑

“Lost Lambs is an absolute riot to read, featuring an incredibly dysfunctional family with every member living out their own drama, and none of them getting a glimpse at the whole picture. A hilarious sitcom of a novel that is fiendishly clever in tying innocuous details into its chaotic plot.”

Carrying on with bookseller Adam’s Waterstones Debut Fiction reviews, we have Under Water by Tara Menon 🌊

“A touching and imaginative exploration of grief in the aftermath of the 2004 boxing day tsunami, from the perspective of a survivor who’s struggling to carry on past the trauma. Under Water is definitely an emotional book, but I loved its unique approach to a heavy topic; a tropical paradise on Christmas day, tinged with melancholy over the unknown horrors you know are on the way.”

Following this announcement of the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize, we wanted to share with you some of our bookseller reviews! Bookseller Adam has read all six of the books on the shortlist. With it being such a strong and exciting lineup of new fiction , we are going to share his thoughts on each one. We can’t wait for you to have as much fun discovering them as we have!

First up is Honey in the Wound by Jiyoung Han:
“A story following one family over 100 years of Korean history, covering the Japanese occupation of the peninsula in a way I’ve never seen before. It’s a very ambitious debut, and grows in intrigue and emotion as the story progresses. With just the barest hint of speculative fiction, Honey In The Wound reads like a long-lost folklore tale, and has all the makings of a modern classic.”
