A little update from me ๐Ÿค

Today is officially the start of my maternity leave ๐Ÿค

For those who have visited over the last few months you will all know that Iโ€™m due to have a baby very soon, which means itโ€™s time for me to take a step back from the shop for a few months!

I had hoped to work a little longer but this heat & being heavily pregnant is a real struggle ๐Ÿซ

This means our opening hours are going to change slightly, with us now closing on a Sunday/Monday but we are still open as normal Tuesday to Saturday! Iโ€™m hoping to be back in October but will keep you updated of any changes.

Our amazing Olivia is going to hold the fort for me while I have a little break, so everything will keep going as normal ๐Ÿค

A little bit of luck ๐Ÿ€

If you're looking for a little extra luck and positivity during exam season, aventurine might be just what you need ๐Ÿ’š

Known as the "crystal of opportunity," aventurine is all about encouraging growth, optimism & the confidence to go after what's ahead.

Why it's a go-to for exam time:
โœจ๏ธ Inspires you to follow new opportunities with confidence
โœจ๏ธ Encourages optimism & a positive mindset
โœจ๏ธ Attracts luck & boosts uplifting energy

It's perfect for those moments when self-doubt creeps in or you're unsure about how things will turn out.

Keeping aventurine nearby can act as a reminder to stay hopeful, trust yourself & keep moving forward, because mindset matters just as much as revision.

More confidence, more positive energy ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ€โœจ๏ธ

A small piece of our shop's history...

It is Lincoln's Festival of History this weekend, which got me thinking about the history of our little shop! I have spent HOURS researching, looking for any tiny snippets of our shop mentioned in history & this by far stuck with me the most...

Between 1857 and 1867, 19 Steep Hill was home to a business run by Rebecca Allis, in an era when women rarely owned or operated businesses independently, her presence here speaks volumes!

She was widowed in 1822 after her husband Samuel got too drunk & fell into the River Witham where he drowned, Rebecca moved into Lincoln & opened her shop here.

The earliest entry I can find is 1857 (however she could have been here longer, as 19 Steep Hill first separated from the Harlequin in 1820 & there were no entries until 1857)

She sold second-hand clothes & antique furniture, whilst also living in the building with her family ๐Ÿค

At a time when it was uncommon for women to run businesses independently, she built a livelihood for herself & her family from this very spot. Rebecca continued working here until her death in 1867, aged 80! Which in the 1800's to live until this age was quite literally a miracle ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Over 160 years later, the shop is of course, once again female-owned by myself. It's a nice continuity, different business, same building & a shared sense of independence across the years ๐Ÿ•ฐโœจ๏ธ

Lincoln Festival of History...

All you have to do is look around Lincoln & your surrounded by so many reminders of the past, lucky for us our shop is no exception!

We feel really special to be the current guardians of 19-20 Steep Hill, a building that's been quietly evolving for hundreds of years ๐Ÿ•ฐ

It all started back in 1744, when this site was part of The Harlequin Inn (originally built in 1170). In the mid-1700s, a separate building was added, what is now our shop, and by 1820 it had become its own space.

Since then, it's had so many different lives: Rebecca Allis selling antiques & clothes here in the 1850s, marine dealers, framemakers, bookshops, antique traders.... right through to us, Lapid Art in 1995 ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿฆ–

The building itself still shows its layers if you look closely. Parts feel older than others, and there are hints it may once have been connected to The Harlequin next door, even sharing walls at one point, before things were changed and rebuilt over the years.

Next time you pop in, look around & you'll notice all our lovely historic quirks throughout the shop.
It's one of those places where you can really feel how much life has passed through it. And we're just the latest chapter in a very long story ๐Ÿ“–
