Another busy session in the Repair Shop yesterday. Almost no spare space on workbenches for our volunteers.

A blocked vacuum cleaner with a damaged flex hose (replacement on order), new items in for repair including a sewing machine and table lamp.

Fixed : robot vacuum cleaner.
Working on : HiFi amplifier (see photos), Kenwood Chef food mixer, clock, radio.

Photos show inside of HiFi amplifier. This one has a hum even when no audio input. We suspect some of the capacitors may be out of tolerance or failed completely.

Lovely to meet everyone who dropped in for a chat today during the Market. Several folks soon to retire and with skills that would be invaluable to our Repair Shop.

Spent some time on a hedge trimmer. Sadly beyond repair. 1st indication of problem was the melted plastic. Opening up, the blades were bent and wear on the cam mechanism. Going deeper we find smashed gears.

This is where maintenance and repair overlap. Items will generally need less repair if they are maintained more. Lubricating moving parts, clearing debris, keeping blades sharp, etc.

In this case it’s possible the blade jammed or locked in place and the motor kept going and crashed the gear in the process. But it could also be a broken tooth that made the machine run sporadically until it eventually jammed and overheated.

Time for recycling WEEE waste.

It great that owners try to repair before recycling as 9/10 things can be fixed and last many more years.

This little fella is keen to go home and so are several other items we have awaiting collection. If you have been notified that an item is ready for collection, please pop along as soon as you can because we have limited space in the Repair Shop and only a small shelving area to store items on.

We are open as usual tonight 5-7pm and Friday 9-12:30. We will also be open on Saturday during the Monthly Market and Linlithgow Shed will be having their Tool Sale too (starting 10am).

So pop along and enjoy the market and meet everyone involved.

Our repair team continue to investigate and solve faults on a range of appliances. Some are obvious cut cables on garden electricals, others like this coffee machine are a bit more of a challenge to test each component and narrow down the fault. In this case it was a blockage on the solenoid valve that required a strip down of a lot of the internals turn taking apart the solenoid and the valve within.

If you have something that needs fixed. Don’t go directly to the council recycling centre or buy a new one straight away. Contact us to see if we can help.

Please send photos and description of the fault to us first as we might be able to save you a trip if it’s not fixable.

With well over 1000 repairs attempted, our team of volunteers and LCDT staff are looking at the next 12-24 months for the Repair Shop.

Could we use a bit more space in the Hub? and what extra benefits would that space bring? Are the open times optimal? Should we have a closed door repair session or classes? How can we improve marketing, social media, etc? What other services might benefit our local community? Could we support apprenticeships and/or more volunteering opportunities? Is our cost model working both for us and our customers? Should we provide a maintenance service for certain items? How can we improve H&S? Should we fundraise? Etc.

Clearly there’s plenty of opportunities to grow and develop our wee setup.

Before and After photos.

Here are a few before and after photos to show some recent work and to give a little advice to anyone with newer style Dyson hairdryers.

This rolltop Singer Sewing machine arrived damaged when customer bought it over internet and we took on the gargantuan task to solidify the broken timber, patch, add fresh oak veneer, stain to match, ad decals and top coat. It took weeks, but the result is amazing.

The next set of photos are a message to all those with newer style Dyson hairdryers that have air intake at the bottom of the handle.
Once the filter is blocked with dust, skin cells, hand cream or whatever - the hairdryer will shut down thinking it’s overheating.
So if you have one of these, please try to avoid covering the air inlet when you hold it and follow the instructions to regularly clean with the wee brush provided. We are happy to use our ultrasonic bath to clean these filters if they get very clogged rather than risk it being thrown in the recycling for such a simple repair. If yours overheats, twist off the outer filter and hold it up to the light. Compare with the photos here. Can you see clearly or is it all shaded and translucent.

Some things are just beyond repair, like this motor from a wet dry vacuum cleaner. It’s had a good life and sooked up lots of dirt, but time has come to be recycled. With older machines getting replacement motors or parts is a challenge. Hence why we want to see strong Right to Repair legislation across the UK and beyond. Things can be fixed if we have access to reasonably priced spare parts and service manuals/diagrams.

Our repair success rate this year remains over 82% and we love a challenge, but sometimes the council WEEE recycling skip is the only solution.

Note, We don’t repair : microwaves, anything that uses petrol, anything containing asbestos, or any safety items such as child car seats, stair gates, etc.

We were incredibly proud today to welcome a customer in to receive back their garden chair - our 1,000th repair! We are delighted to hand it back and hope it's around for many summers to come.

We've been blown away by the reception we've had in the community and have repaired everything from teddies to coffee machines, hairdryers to hoverboards. Today's chair marks the 1,000th time that someone has made the decision to repair rather than replace their item, reducing waste and saving money.
