The 2003 (52-plate) Kawasaki KLX400R is a bit of a hidden gem. Sold in relatively small numbers in the UK, it’s mechanically almost identical to the Suzuki DR-Z400E, meaning parts availability is excellent despite the Kawasaki badge.

This engine has a reputation for covering 30,000–50,000 miles without major work if oil changes and air filter maintenance have been kept up.

It remains one of the best-value trail bikes you can buy. It’s not the fastest or lightest machine, but it’s incredibly durable, easy to maintain and enjoyable to ride. For trail riding, green-laning and occasional road use, it still competes well with much newer bikes.

The 2007 Suzuki GSX-R600 (K7) is widely regarded as one of the best all-round 600cc supersports of its era. It wasn’t the outright fastest bike in the class, but it combined a superb chassis, a strong mid-range engine and typical Suzuki reliability, making it an excellent road and track machine.

The 2022 Yamaha R7 marked the return of the R7 name, although it was a very different bike from the original homologation special of the late 1990s. Instead of chasing outright horsepower, Yamaha built a sports bike focused on real-world road riding, using the excellent 689cc CP2 parallel-twin engine from the MT-07.

If you’re looking for a sports bike you’ll mainly ride on the road, the 2022 R7 is one of the best choices in its class. It delivers enjoyable performance at legal speeds, is forgiving to ride, and the CP2 engine is renowned for its reliability.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 is one of the best-value adventure bikes ever made. It isn’t fast or high-tech, but it has a huge amount of charm and is exceptionally capable on roads and trails.

What you’ll like….

* Easy-going engine: The 411cc air-cooled single produces around 24 bhp and 32 Nm of torque. It’s all about smooth, low-rev torque rather than outright speed.

* Excellent comfort: Upright ergonomics, a low 800 mm seat height and long-travel suspension make it comfortable for long days in the saddle.

* Surprisingly capable off-road: The 21-inch front wheel, compliant suspension and manageable power inspire confidence on gravel tracks and green lanes.

The Yamaha X-City 125 is a practical, large-wheel scooter designed primarily for commuting. It offers more stability and comfort than many small-wheeled scooters, making it a great choice for urban riding and occasional faster roads.

What we like….

* Excellent ride quality: The 16-inch wheels cope well with potholes and uneven roads.
* Reliable engine: The 125cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected single-cylinder engine is known for Yamaha reliability and longevity.
* Comfortable riding position: Plenty of legroom and a natural upright posture.
* Good weather protection: The fairing and screen provide decent wind protection.
* Strong build quality: Feels solid and well put together, even on older examples.

Performance….

* Engine: 125cc liquid-cooled single

* Top speed: Around 65–70 mph (depending on rider and conditions)
