This is the second week of the installation of the organ in St Barnabas Jericho Oxford. The scaffolding is up and the largest pipes are the first to be installed in the organ chamber. In Liverpool, the Soundboards and Actions are dismantled from the building frame and this is then all transported to Oxford and built up again in the Church. The Reservoirs, Soundboards and Actions are all now in place and the wind trunking is being fitted.

We have restored the Blocks and made new Shallots, Tongues, Loads and Springs so that these pipes now speak in their original voice once more. Our previous posts show the works carried out in detail.

Continuing with the restoration of the bottom end of the 32’ Contra Trombone from Liverpool Cathedral, the blocks are bored out where they have suffered abuse over the years; the original metal is then melted and cast back into the holes. After being turned on the lathe they are ready for fitting with the newly made shallots and springs.

The business end of the Contra Trombone 32' from the organ of Liverpool Cathedral is receiving attention in our Metalshop. Alterations over the years have changed it from its originally intended timbre. We are currently restoring the Blocks, replacing the Springs and making new Shallots, Tongues and Loads to bring this majestic, enclosed 32' rank back into its original voice. New Shallots are needed as the original ones had been changed, including removal of their filling pieces, lengthening of the faces and several had also been bent.

This month has seen the complete factory restoration of the Willis II main Great and Swell Soundboards for St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, Glasgow . The photographs show stripping the Soundboards; making new Fillings; flooding the bars with hot glue; making and fitting Boated Pallet guards. Buckram cloth is laid on the grid; the Pallets are re-covered with felt and leather and new tails fitted before applying them to the Soundboard, fitting springs and attaching new pulldown wires. The Tables are planed true and re-grooved; the Bearers and Slides re-applied and lubricated with Colloidal Graphite along with the Upperboards. The Soundboards are then re-assembled and fully tested on the wind.
