We’ve found them!

These are the cinema slides that advertised the shop at the Carlton Cinema in Tuebrook & the Premier Cinema in Old Swan between 1947-1960.

All the music played during the intervals were 78rpm records provided by my Great Nan Dorothy, as the shops advertisement was displayed on the screen.

These had gone missing for years but we’ve just recently found them!

The upstairs cabinet!

When The Musical Box opened in 1947, alongside 78rpm records the shop also stocked harmonicas, fancy goods, guitar strings & stylus. This is just a small part of the surplus stock!

We’ve always wondered if John Lennon used to purchase his banjo strings from the shop when he used to visit during the early 60’s, when he was staying at Hayman’s Green.

A collection of x10 never seen before photographs!

We recently unearthed some negative film reels that had never been developed before dating back to the 1950’s.

Thankfully my Great Grandad Charles was an amateur photographer which is how we’re so lucky to have so much documented history. He left boxes upon boxes of negative film around the shop which we are still finding to this day! 📷

Have you ever noticed the 78’s record sleeves framed in our upstairs shop floor?

All these record sleeves belonged to long lost Liverpool record shops, some of them are over 100 years old!

We unearthed these during the shops renovation a few years ago and had them displayed to preserve Liverpools musical heritage.

Then and now! 1951-2026

During the early 60's Tony's Grandad Charles took a rare trip away to Earl's Court Motorshow. On the only day he happened to be away a car crashed straight into the shop completely destroying all the window display and door. The whole shop front had to be redesigned and rebuilt into how it looks today!

Tony’s Birthday today also shared with fellow scouser Paul McCartney!

With it being Macca’s Birthday also we thought we’d revisit another one of our magical mysteries for over 50 years.

My Nan Diane came across these x2 7” singles in the 70’s with the name Paul McCartney stickered on. They were believed to have been a part of his personal collection when he was a teen prior to The Beatles, Diane had them in storage for decades.

The Beatles covered A Shot Of Rhythm & Blues at many BBC performances and both songs were of Pauls taste of the time. If these are confirmed to be Pauls we would love to gift them back to him!

The history behind the shops 115 year old piano!

The John Brinsmead & Sons piano originally purchased from Rushworth & Dreaper came from my Great Nan Dorothy’s home after surviving the Liverpool May Blitz in 1941, it was relocated to the shop when opening in 1947.

When we renovated the second shop floor 5 years ago we thought it would be only fitting to have the piano restored and brought back to life, as in later years it had begun to sound like Les Dawsons.

Since it’s restoration the piano has been played by the likes of Rick Wakeman, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Craig Charles, Steve Nieve and regularly by customers. Diane was always pleased to know that her Mother Dorothy’s piano was still being played & enjoyed all these generations later!

Macca's 18th studio album, named after the road in Speke where he visited as a boy. The Boys Of Dungeon Lane captures the days of nostalgic memories growing up in Liverpool and represents Paul never forgetting his roots.
