Sapphire is usually thought of as a beautiful blue stone set into expensive jewellery, but its magical history goes far deeper than appearance alone.

For centuries, sapphire has been connected with truth, loyalty, protection, sacred authority and promises intended to last. It is one of the hardest natural materials on Earth, which makes its association with fidelity and enduring commitment particularly appropriate. This is not a delicate stone that crumbles under pressure.

Blue sapphire is especially useful when you need clarity, honest communication or the courage to acknowledge something you already suspect. I often think of it as a stone of disciplined truth. It does not encourage cruelty disguised as honesty. It helps you speak clearly, judge wisely and remain steady when emotion or wishful thinking has clouded the situation.

The different colours also bring their own magical emphasis. Pink sapphire suits emotional truth and faithful love, yellow supports prosperity and confident decisions, green encourages patient growth, and white sapphire works beautifully for purification and clear intention.

As September’s birthstone, sapphire offers protection, wisdom and loyalty rather than a fixed personality description for everybody born this month. Birthstones are better treated as allies and blessings, not as proof that every September-born person is automatically calm and trustworthy. If only life were that simple.

Our beautiful handmade besoms have arrived at the Witch Haus 🧹🍂

And these aren’t mass-produced decorations — every single one is individually handmade and completely bespoke, so no two are exactly the same.

Each besom has been decorated with its own gorgeous combination of autumn flowers, foliage, berries, pinecones and seasonal details. They’re wonderfully witchy without being overly dark, and they look stunning displayed in the home, beside an altar, in a witchy corner or simply propped by the hearth.

Traditionally, the besom has long been associated with cleansing, protection and sweeping away unwanted or stagnant energy — which makes them rather more interesting than your average broom.

Another beautiful commission has left the Witch Haus today. 🖤

This wonderfully atmospheric graveyard painting was created by our very own Jasmine Jackson, commissioned especially for one of our customers through the Witch Haus.

I absolutely love this one. The moonlit sky, twisted old trees, gravestones, little chapel and that watchful owl give it a wonderfully dark, witchy feel without losing the fact that it is completely individual and hand-painted. It's the sort of painting where you keep noticing another little detail every time you look at it.

And today it went home with its new owner. ❤️

One of the things I really love about having independent artists working through the Witch Haus is being able to offer something you simply can't pick up from a shelf. Someone comes to us with an idea, Jasmine turns that idea into an original piece of artwork, and the customer ends up owning something that exists only for them.

SHRUNKEN HAND OF GLORY

Now this is a proper conversation piece.

Inspired by one of the darker and stranger pieces of British folklore, the Hand of Glory was traditionally said to be the preserved hand of a hanged man, used by thieves and practitioners of old folk magic. Legends claimed it could render those inside a house motionless, open locks, extinguish ordinary lights and provide supernatural illumination to whoever carried it.

Thankfully, ours has a rather less gruesome origin. 😂

This wonderfully macabre Shrunken Hand of Glory is displayed beneath a glass cloche on a wooden base and finished with its own aged museum-style identification tag:

“Shrunken Hand of Glory – Found 1862 – Lancashire.”

It looks as though it has been lifted straight from the cabinet of some deeply questionable Victorian occultist.

Perfect for a witchy home, altar room, oddities collection, gothic interior or simply for the person who likes visitors to look at something and ask, “What the bloody hell is THAT?”
