We were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Bonnie Greer, a brilliant writer, playwright, critic and broadcaster, and a much-loved guest of WoWFEST.

Bonnie joined us in Liverpool more than once, including in 2010 for A Rebel Rant with Bonnie Greer and again in 2011 for Liverpool: City of Radicals.

She was a brilliant writer and thinker, an engaging and generous guest, warm, funny and always great company. We remember her with great affection and send our condolences to her family and friends.

As part of Heritage Open Days 2026, Writing on the Wall presents a special exhibition at Toxteth Library celebrating the extraordinary life and legacy of George Garrett (1896–1966) – Liverpool writer, seafarer, playwright, activist and social historian whose work gave voice to the lives and experiences of working-class people.

Exhibition free and is open from 11th-25th September at Toxteth Library, Windsor Street.

A brilliant Writer's Bloc session in Toxteth last week with poet Alison Schultz. During the session Alison shared her advice and tips for editing and re-drafting poetry and participants got the chance to put her advice into practice by editing some of their own poetry!

Charlie Lea will be delivering workshops on Showing Personality in Writing at the Writer's Bloc Birkenhead on the 14th & Writer's Bloc Bootle on the 16th September.

During the 2 hour session we will look at how to show personality using dialogue, thought and action and I will also look at showing neuro diversity and using dramatic irony.

Charlie Lea is passionate about all things literary. As well as writing his own stories, he loves running creative writing workshops for both adults and children, online and in person as well as promoting the joy of reading to all. For his work boosting literacy and a love of all things literary, he was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2017. He runs regular creative writing workshops for both adults and children through his organisation Read Now Write Now www.readnowwritenow.org.uk

This walking tour explores a little-known history in our city’s well documented past. The anti-black riots of 1919.
Inspired by Writing on the Wall’s hugely successful Great War to Race Riots archive project and the Black Lives and Legacies 1919 project in association with Liverpool University, this walking tour explores a little-known history in our city’s well documented past. The anti-black riots of 1919 were a watershed moment for Liverpool’s black community, the oldest in Europe.

BHM26: The L8 Activism Walking Tour

The L8 Activism Walking Tour invites you to take a stroll down the beautiful, tree-lined Victorian boulevard and explore the rich history of Liverpool 8 — the traditional home of the Black community since the mid-20th century.

The L8 Activism Walking Tour culminates on the former site of the Liverpool 8 Law Center, an organisation which arose out of the ‘81 Uprisings and which played a key role in the support and empowerment of L8 and the Black communities and then onto empty plinth where William Huskinson once stood. Join us to find out what happened to him and much more history that you won’t find in books.

BHM26: The Liverpool & Slavery Walking Tour

On this tour we explore the many sites and streets with direct links to the Transatlantic Slave Trade in Liverpool city centre. We discuss the depth of the city’s connections to the trade of enslaved Africans and the goods they produced long after its abolition in Britain. This tour also considers the legacies of the Atlantic Slave Trade, the origins of anti-Black racism and white supremacy, which in the 18th and 19th centuries were seen as justifications for horrific oppression and continue to encourage racial hatred violence in the present day.

Alison is one of the team who run Wirral Poetry Festival (annual) & alslo curates/hosts a monthly performance night, The Wordsmithery. Currently the Wirral Libraries Poet-in-Residence, Alison is also the Ambassador for the National Year of Reading.
