Tracy Hills Jewellery Jewellery Designer and Maker Tracy Hills is an award winning jewellery designer and maker based in Farnham, Surrey. UCC 1-103 1-308 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

With a love of all things dark, her inspirations are varied; fairy tales, fantasy, nature, gothic, history and textiles; they all find their way into her work.

‘Immortal’, one of her current collections focuses on animal skulls, jaws and claws. These have been cast from real animal bones, which have been found or donated, none have been deliberately killed. By adding hats and flowers to the skull

s, or bangles to the bird claws has given the collection a quirky element rather than a macabre or dark one. Playing with wax carving today.

For those of you who know me, I have always been fascinated with Mother Earth, texture and shape - the more organic and rougher the better.
So today I am playing with the idea of excavation for my new collection.
The inspiration behind it is digging into the earth to find all sorts of weird and wonderful things - minerals, gemstones etc. (Not to mention finding lots of 'wrigglies' etc - which I have immortalised in silver in my other collections)

This theme also ties in with my previous collections - E.g. 'Molten ' which was inspired by flowing lava and 'Erode' - which was inspired by textures in the earth's surface which over time has been weathered by acid rain, water and wind.

So, the new idea is 'Excavate'. I have these ideas in my head, but I cannot draw to save my life - so instead, I will play with waxes, and see what happens....

Stock Take Sunday.

It is the time of the year, when I need to start planning for Christmas. It might seem a bit early, but as a small business owner, now is the perfect time to start checking my stock levels and then ordering from my Casting company.

Until about the 22nd December, this is my extra busy time creating gifts for you. A lot of what I make are special orders and commissions; but I do also sell a lot of my regular stock items, like my seashells, seahorses and my ever popular woodland collection.

So, on this grey autumn day in England, it seems a perfect time for taking stock, and then ordering what I will need to have cast. Being this organised is unusual for me, as I always leave everything to the last minute. In fact my family nickname is lastminute.mom

Most of my current pieces are all still in their raw state. There is still a lot of work to do to turn them into lovely shiny pieces of jewellery - casting sprues need to be filed off, bails need to be soldered on, rings need to be made, and then they all need to be filed and polished before they are ready to be worn.

Looking at all these pieces, I am feeling a little bit nostalgic as I will be retiring most of my Immortal collection - these comprise jaws, claws, skulls and bones. Most of which have been cast from real animal bones. I have been doing them for over 15 years now. I feel it is time for a change - but I'll miss them.

My front garden is covered with sycamore leaves, and as I swept them up and put them in the green recycle bin, I felt sorry for the dry brown little 'helicopter' leaves. It got me thinking that they will never have the chance to set seed. Never have the chance to become huge sycamores themselves. Isn't that such a shame?
All is not lost, as they will be recycled into compost to enrich soil and plants everywhere.

It got me thinking though, of some of my own sycamore leaves which I collected years ago and immortalised in silver. In doing so, it also made me realise that I have totally neglected my social pages. So as I sit down at my desktop and blow the spider webs and dusty leaves off my keyboard, I will explain why I have been absent for so long.

I have mentioned before that I opened my own jewellery school, (Metal and Flame Jewellery School) which opened once we were allowed to socialise again after Covid.

Besides discovering that I absolutely love teaching - like any new baby, setting up and establishing the school has taken up all of my time. So much so, that my own jewellery line has basically been on hold since then.

But I think I have reached the stage where I am ready to embrace my own jewellery making once again.

I have some new collection ideas which I have been sitting on for a very long time; which hopefully, I can start introducing over the coming months.

Before I leave, I want to send a huge thank you to those who have not deserted me, even though I have not posted in so long. It means a lot to me.

In the meantime, I will leave you with an image of one of my pieces of jewellery, which not only reflects where we are in our ever changing seasons, but is also the inspiration behind this post.

Unfortunately, I have not been as productive over this past year, as I would have liked. Some of you may know that I opened a Jewellery School. (Metal and Flame Jewellery School).

Like any new baby, it has taken up so much of my time, that I haven't had much of a chance to spend any time doing my own jewellery - let alone have time to keep you up to date on social media. I have certainly missed spending time in my lovely studio just making my own designs, and I hope to be able to do more this year.

My school is in its toddler phase now, so I am hoping to be able to step back a bit and dedicate some time to my own jewellery line. I have some new designs which have been on the back burner for so long, and I am hoping to release them soon.

Thank you so much to those of you have stuck by me, purchased, liked and commented on posts. I appreciate each and every one of you.

In the meantime, I am taking a little break, but before I go, I'll leave you with a few of my favourite pieces from my collections.

Wishing you and yours all the very best for 2023

As I sit blowing the cobwebs off my keyboard, I have only just realised how long it has been since I last posted. The wheel of the year has turned twice since then!

This doesn't mean I have not been busy. My jewellery school takes up a lot of my time these days, but I have still found some time at the bench to craft.

I am a bit behind with my new collection, which I had hoped to have ready by now. Sadly this was not to be.

So before I scurry back to my trusty workbench, I'll leave you with one of nature's most perfect autumnal offerings. The Sycamore Leaf – perfectly immortalised here in sterling silver.

The Sycamore tree is a member of the Earths oldest family of trees, found to be more than a 100 million years old. Unbelievably, they can live to be over 600 years old. They symbolise many things - strength, protection, eternity, divinity and vitality. They are also believed to promote relaxation and harmony, whilst at the same time raising energy levels and banishing lethargy. It is also said to not only bring success and abundance, but also to teach humility. Quite a feat for the humble Sycamore.

Why not wear a bit of nature? Available in oxidised and with a high shine.

A lovely early morning stroll on the beach with the family, and the fur babies.

Of course my Seahorse had to come along for a swim.

A bit windy, but great to get out and do some beach combing. 🐶

Sooooo, it has been a long time since I've posted. 3 months in fact. This is partially due to the fact that in winter I tend to hibernate. I love the sun, and come out of my shell once the sun shines.

We had some lovely sunshine a few days ago, which had me heading to the beach. Still far too cold for me to swim, but a walk on the beach and a visit to Anthony Gormley's Another Place, was just the thing to get me out of hibernation. And look what I found whilst beach combing! A little crab claw. I hope it lost its claw due to molting and not by some other foul means.

Now the big question is... should I have it cast in silver? Immortalise a little part of this little crustacean? And if so.... how do I preserve it? I can hardly send a smelly crab claw to my casters! Please let me know if you have any ideas.

I think it'd make a very cool piece of jewellery.
