On 10th September 1966, Revolver reached No.1 in America, beginning a six-week run at the top of the US albums chart.

By 1966, The Beatles were no longer simply following the rules of pop music. They were rewriting them.

On this day in 1960, The Beatles played their very first night in Hamburg.

It was 17th August 1960. Five young men from Liverpool — John, Paul, George, Pete Best and Stu Sutcliffe — arrived tired and hungry at the Indra Club on the Grosse Freiheit. They played to a handful of spectators, were told to turn their amps down, and slept five to a bed in their manager's flat afterwards.

Four and a half hours a night on weekdays. Six hours on Saturdays. 48 nights straight.

It was the beginning of everything.

George Harrison later said: "The Reeperbahn and Grosse Freiheit were the best thing we'd ever seen, clubs and neon lights everywhere."

🚔 On this day in 1972 — Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney and Denny Seiwell were arrested for cannabis possession in Sweden.

After a Wings concert at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg, armed police blocked the dressing room door. Swedish authorities had been watching the group for days — they'd intercepted a phone call arranging for two cassette cases packed with ma*****na to be sent from London.

Seven ounces were found. The trio admitted it was theirs, paid fines totalling around £1,000, and the Wings Over Europe Tour carried on the very next night.

Five weeks later, police turned up at the McCartneys' farm in Campbeltown, Scotland — and found five cannabis plants. Another fine. Another headline.

Far from damaging Wings, the arrests made global news at a time when the band desperately needed it. One unnamed Wings member put it best: "The police action against us was an excellent advertisement. Our name flies now all over the world."

🎂 On this day in 1946, Mary Cox was born in Liverpool — the woman who would become Maureen Starkey, first wife of Ringo Starr and one of the most important figures in the inner circle of The Beatles.

She met Ringo at the Cavern Club, married him at Caxton Hall on 11th February 1965, and raised three children including Zak Starkey — who went on to drum for The Who.

🎂 Today would have been Pete Shotton's 85th birthday.

Born in Liverpool on 4th August 1941, Pete was John Lennon's childhood best friend — the original Quarrymen washboard player, the man who inspired lines in Eleanor Rigby and I Am the Walrus, and the first managing director of Apple Corps.

📅 On This Day — 3rd August 1963 The Beatles played their final show at the Cavern Club. And nobody wanted to believe it was the end.

After nearly 300 performances in that sweaty, electric basement on Mathew Street, Liverpool, The Beatles took the stage one last time — and the city knew it.

Tickets had sold out in 30 minutes. Brian Epstein capped the crowd at 500 for safety. The admission was 10 shillings. Outside, fans were going mad — John Lennon arrived with a sleeve torn clean off his mohair jacket.

Then the power went out.

In the darkness, Lennon and McCartney picked up acoustic guitars and played When I'm Sixty-Four — a song the world wouldn't hear on record until 1967. When the lights came back, John was furious. "We never should have come back here," he told the other acts backstage.

But the Cavern faithful didn't care. To them, it was still the same old Beatles.

From their first appearance on 9th February 1961 to this final night — 292 shows, 155 lunchtime sessions, 125 evenings — the Cavern was where it all began. And on 3rd August 1963, it ended.

📅 On This Day in Beatles History — 22nd July 1971

Fifty-five years ago today, a lawsuit landed in the New York Supreme Court that cut to the heart of one of rock's most bitter publishing battles.

Northern Songs — by then controlled by ATV, not Lennon or McCartney — sued Maclen Music over Paul and Linda McCartney's co-writing credit on Another Day. The claim? That the joint credit violated McCartney's existing contractual obligations. The ask? $50,000 in actual damages and $1 million in punitive damages.

It was one song. One writing credit. And it exposed just how completely McCartney had lost control of his own publishing.

📅 On This Day in Beatles History — 15th July 1958

Sixty-eight years ago today, a 17-year-old boy from Liverpool lost his mother.

Julia Lennon had just said goodbye at the gate of Menlove Avenue. She was funny, warm, and free-spirited — the parent who truly got John. She'd bought him his first guitar. She'd danced to rock and roll with him when Aunt Mimi disapproved. She understood him.

And then, in an instant, she was gone 💔

John never really spoke about that night. But he never stopped speaking to her — through music.

🎵 "Julia, Julia, oceanchild, calls me..." 🎵 "Mother, you had me, but I never had you..." 🎵 "My Mummy's Dead..."

Three songs. A lifetime of grief. And a son named Julian, so her name would live on.

Today, we remember Julia Lennon — the woman who shaped one of the greatest artists the world has ever known. 💙
